Driving from Prince Edward Island to NYC

We will be spending a few days in Prince Edward Island with friends before driving down the coast to New York City area...we have roughly four days and I'm thinking of St. Andrews (Canada), Bar Harbor/Acadia, then? ...any suggestions? Is Portland nice? We'd like to drive a few hours each day and see some sites along the way. Would it be better to re route a bit and do Campobello Island? Our friends on PEI suggested St. Andrews as a pretty stop. We'll avoid the big city bit ...looking more for pretty scenery, nature, the great outdoors...

We're traveling very soon so any tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Revising my question...If we drive from PEI to St. Andrews (Day 1, arriving lunchtime) and spend the night there, Day 2 Drive to Bar Harbor/Acadia and spend the day/overnite there...Day 3-drive to Kennebunkport, spend the night... Day 4 drive Kennebunkport to NYC area...sound reasonable as far as driving?

I think its about 4 1/2 from PEI to St. Andrews, then it looks like Bar Harbor is only a little over an hour from St. Andrews, we'll have 4 hours driving from Bar Harbor to Kennebunkport and anywhere between 5 and 7 on to NYC area.

Thanks!

Just FYI, it takes about 4.5 - 5 hours to drive between Boston and NYC during the week. Perhaps 4 hours if you drive in the middle of the night. Therefore, I'd say 7 hours is more realistic for Kennebunkport to NYC. If you drive during the weekday, you'll hit traffic either in Boston or NYC; or both.

thanks for that

Although what yk said is on the safe side, I drove NYC to Portland this spring in just 5.5 hours. K'port is about an hour south of us. But you're both in the right ballpark. However, BH is definitely longer than an hour from St. Andrews. Google maps says 3 hours 20 min. Its a lot of driving, and I bet you'll wish you had spent more than one night in any one place, but I know the temptation to try and see all you can on a trip. All the places you've chosen to stop are good.

if we are driving thru Portland (Just stopping to sleep) any suggestions for a hotel?

Instead of Portland, I'd try to make it to Portsmouth, NH for the night, then you're only 1 hour outside of Boston, 5 hours from NYC, so BH-Portsmouth would be around 4-5 hours.

sorry-I wasn't clear....we're driving all the way to PEI and just stopping someplace on the way up...thinking we'll try to get as far as Portland...on the way home we'll be coming from Kennebunk area

If you're just here for the night I'd spring for a hotel right down in the Old Port area. Try the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Portland Waterfront, or the Portland Harbor Hotel. Both are quite new and probably pricey. Living here I don't have any personal experience, but I would go for location and be able to walk around during the evening. Tons of restaurants and shops and you can explore the waterfront.
