DRIVING FROM PHOENIX TO SEDONA
 

My Wife and I will be driving from Phoenix to Sedona in May. It will be mid morning and I was wondering if you have any suggestions of sights to see along the way. Also on our trip where can we stop to get some amazing Fry Bread? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

We made that drive a few years ago as part of our Arizona vacation. I would recommend stoppin at the Montezuma Castle Indian ruins (right off Route 17). It was pretty interesting. Here's a link to a website with more info: http://www.americansouthwest.net/ari..._monument.html

There was a really cool little restaurant off one of the Rt 17 exits just out of the Phoenix area that we stopped for lunch at that I would recommend ... known for it's great pies. However, I can't recall the name now ... maybe other posters can help? (It's on the west side of Rt 17 as your heading north.)

If you have a bit of time, I would highly recommend a side trip on the way to the town of Jerome. We went there on our recent trip to Arizona. It's a bit of a side trip off Route 17, and then you can just drive north up 89A from Jerome into Sedona.

Jerome is an old copper mining town that is literally built into the side of the mountain. It's now more of an artist colony with a much "funkier" vibe than Sedona (also with much more reasonable prices). It's really a cool town to visit. Have lunch at the old Assylum Hotel at the top of the hill.

There's also the Tuzigoot Indian ruins just north of Jerome (off the old 89A that runs through Clarkdale) that are interesting. There's information about them in the above website also.

The restaurant is the Black Canyon Cafe. The highlight is the pie -- and the breakfasts are very good as well.

I second Cher's suggestions on the Montezuma ruins & Jerome. You can easily visit the ruins in less than an hour, so it's a great side trip. As for Jerome, depending on your time frame and your other plans, you might want to consider doing it as a half-day trip during your stay in Sedona.

The only fry bread we had was at Cameron Trading post, which was on the way back from the Grand Canyon, so that's definitely not on your way.

I'd also suggest you do a search on this forum for Sedona, and you'll find a wealth of information.
