Driving from NY to Boston
 

I am flying into New York on Saturday 29th November about 4pm.
How long will it take me to drive to Boston and is it an easy drive ? or should I consider flying ?

You don;t say which airport you'll be landing at - and it makes a difference. From LGA to drive to Boston will take 4 hours actual drive (plus time for renting a car etc). Plus, prices for one way rentals are not cheap. So - if LGA - which has shuttles to Boston every 30 minutes I would probably fly.

If you're landing at JFK or EWR - it depends on what flights you can get to Boston.

Without knowing how long you will be there, if I is just you or several people, and when/how you will return home it's difficult to say what makes the most sense.

(And a car IN Boston is useless - good only if you're driving outside the city.)

Four hours is the absolute minimum amount of time it will take. Although that is Thanksgiving weekend, Saturday should be the lightest day for traffic of the 4.

"Is it an easy drive?" - well if you hit no traffic and it does not snow, it is not bad. But in bad traffic or weather it could take 6+ hours and try your patience.

Oh silly me, 2 of us are flying into JFK from Turks & Caicos and joining up with friends in Boston, 1 night only, and touring New England.

We can fly from Provo to Miami and then on to Boston but will take all day so thought if drive easy, that may be easier way to get to Boston.

Oh forgot, we fly back to UK from Boston.

On the other hand, if the weather's bad, you'll still get to Boston if you're driving, whereas if you're flying, you're grounded. Especially on that weekend, I'd avoid flying, which has a much greater hassle factor than driving for that particular route.

When will you return to NY?

Well, nevermind the "return to NY" question!

Flying on Sat should not be THAT bad. True, if weather is bad you many be grounded. But if weather is that bad the drive can easily take 7 or 8 hours - instead of 4 (which assumes good weather, clear roads, no traffic and flying low).

Sorry - that's kind of early for snow in NYC - but you can easily have rain or sleet - and in/around Boston you can easily run into snow, sleet or ice at the end of Nov.

Have you considered the train from NY to Boston. Amtrak is very comfortable and is not as impacted by weather or traffic. You'd have to get from JFK to Penn Station but after that it would be a very easy trip.

Between possible airline back ups on Thanksgiving weekend - and traffic tie ups (it has taken relatives of ours from NYC up to 6 ot 7 hours even on that Saturday in the past) -

I would opt for Amtrak - as someone else above suggested . It is the mode of transport that gives you the best percentage of running on time during that weekend.

With the price of gas these days, I'm not sure. However here's a map for ya, move your mouse around to see the boston area. I believe its about a 4 and half hour drive.
