Driving from New Orleans to Nashville

My husband and I are driving from New Orleans to Nashville. I realize it's quite a long drive and I would like to know of some nice stops we can make along the way. We have unlimited time, so we can spend a day or two anywhere thats suggested. We like culture, history, adventure......any help would be appreciated.

Are you more interested in cities like Memphis or Birmingham/Montgomery, or more interested in smaller towns in the Mississippi Delta (many people go there for the blues history)? I'm not an expert on Mississippi or Alabama, but there are several threads here about the Delta region if that's up your alley. Birmingham and Montgomery have civil rights history. Memphis has a great civil rights museum in addition to all the music history.

Taking the Natchez Trace can be a lot more pleasant than either interstate routes (Memphis or B'ham) to Nashville. However, there aren't a bunch of great restaurants or hotels along the way.

See the above thread "Nashville, Memphis and Dallas" and do the Nashville to NO part in reverse.

Natchez Trace is nice, and it is great to drive because of no trucks, but you would miss Vicksburg, Clarksdale and Memphis. OTOH, it goes right by Tupelo, MS, with the Elvis Presley boyhood home.

If I had an unlimited amount of time, I would not think of taking the interstate, except possibly from Memphis to Nashville, and probably not even then. If you're into the Civil War, you could see Shiloh National Battlefield and a couple of the other battlefields in the area, or could drive to Florence, Alabama, to see Helen Keller birthplace and lots of music-related things in the vicinity (W.C. Handy Home, Fame Records in Muscle Shoals), or could do both.
