I hear you Gail...sounds right and efficient, but since I have 3 days and two nights, I'm probably going NeoPatrick's route, which honestly, sounds wonderful. Makes what is a very long ride alone very bearable...actually, it's perfect and I'm looking forward to Savannah. I'll start out at 7:30 am which will put me there in good time for drinks/dinner and a walkabout.

So thanks again Fodorites...the very best travel gang.

If you are still checking back in the AM, please check travel and weather reports. Much of the mid-atlantic region from the Carolinas north into New England has had unusual snow. Even on major highways this may still be an issue by the time you are in this area on Sunday/Monday, especially since the south is predicted to follow up with an ice storm. Ice storms can be serious and consequences last for days in the south - and we heard from people in NC last night who are living thru this now.

Then the DC area is predicted to get well over a foot of snow - this will shut things down for days, literally. Southern New England will follow on Sunday - but we can handle the snow with more experience and equipment.

Even though you are chasing the storm up the coast, its consequences could still effect your travels. Be informed and stay safe.

And be careful in Savannah after dark - other than the immediate few blocks of the Historic District, it can be unsafe for women alone after dark - and it is easy to wander into an unsafe area without realizing it.

Gail -- that was so wonderful of you to post!

So after all that, I canceled the drive due to the extreme weather conditions. I did think about trying to beat it, but there was no way.

The new plan is to drive to Orlando, meet my brother and family there for a day or so (Disney?), leave him the car, and I fly home to NYC. Better all the way around.

So, it all worked out and I didn't have to make the drive alone. I think traveling with someone else for that type of long haul who can not only help with the driving but provide companionship is a far better plan - if possible. If no, then for me, 7 hours of driving a day is enough, and I would plan accordingly.

Happy holidays everyone...and thanks again for all your wonderful advice.

As long as your safe! I am one for a road trip and I like doing it alone, but if you're not comfortable with it, then it worked out for you. I wish the weather was better for your trip to NY, but at least you don't have to take a drive that didn't thrill you. I'm glad it worked out!

I'm glad you didn't get stuck on the road with this snowy weather. Did you have any problem getting a flight?

If it were summertime, I could see loving the trip - even alone - making stops all along the way. But winter is a different story. Could you imagine if I had gotten stuck in all that? Would not have been pretty.

It was very easy getting a flight out of Orlando on Jet Blue Christmas Eve day.

So, it all worked out.

Thanks again!

Have a good trip - I am also glad it is working out. I am guessing everyone who posted a response originally plus all others who read the thread would have been worried about you making that drive in this weekend's weather.
