Driving from Los Angeles to San Francisco
 

I'm planing to drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco one way, any ideas on
1) where to get a one way rental for a fine price
2) a good hotel in mid-way preferably a starwood hotel?

First of all, LA to SF is a one day drive on either I-5 or Hwy 101. If you take the scenic route on Hwy 1, then you need to allow a day and a half. Half way on 101 would put you somewhere around San Luis Obispo, a good place to stop. I checked the Starwood web site and found nothing between LA and SF except near one end or the other. Come back after you think about a route.

I plan on taking the Hwy 101 (not the I-5) and maybe for some parts the Hwy 1, what do you suggest?
Do you have suggestions for hotels in San Luis Obispo.

At SLO, I highly recommend switching to Highway 1 and going thru Big Sur , Carmel and Santa Cruz to see the beautiful coastline and charming seaside towns. Then from Santa Cruz take HWY 17 east to HWY 280. Take 280 to SF----it has less traffic and is more scenic than that stretch of 101 to SF.
A good way to shop for oneway car rental is to call several of the major rental companies and compare their rates. Depending on which company is running a promotion when you go, the rates will vary quite a bit. Also ask them which discounts you can qualify for.
