Driving from Las Vegas to San Fran in April
My husband and I are visiting America in April 2016 and we were planning on driving from Las Vegas to San Francisco.
I have read a few different reviews that the road will be closed in April and that you will have to go the long and not so scenic way. I am now wondering if it is even worth it and am considering flying to San Fran. However we did really want to go to Yosemite National Park. Is Yosemite worth visiting in April? Is the drive worth it? Thanks :) |
In April Allegiant Airline flies from Las Vegas to Fresno CA every day except Tuesdays. Fly to Fresno, rent a car and come into Yosemite from the south entrance.
When you return the car to Fresno, you can either fly to San Francisco or take a taxi from the airport to the train station and take a San Joaquin train to Emeryville with an Amtrak bus to one of several locations in San Francisco. Allegiant.com Amtrak.com |
You could fly to Fresno but Allegiant isn't a great airline -- they charge extra for absolutely everything.
You do not have to give up Yosemite. It is easily reached from the west (the park is MUCH closer to San Francisco than to Las Vegas). So depending on how much time you have - you could either fly to SFO and sometime during your time in the city rent a car and drive to Yosemite for a night or two. Or, fly LV to Sacramento, pick up a car, visit the California Gold Rush foothills and down to Yosemite, across to the Monterey area and up to San Francisco. |
janisj's recommendation is spot on.
Sacramento airport (SMF) is very easy to navigate. The foothills will be green in the Gold Country and the flowers normally are blooming. Vineyards in the Gold Country will look beautiful, too. |
I also agree with janisj, just make sure you have reservations for Yosemite for at least one overnight, the park books up to a year in advance.
