Driving from DIA to Breck
We are going to Breck in a couple of weeks and are thinking of renting a car- it's actually cheaper for 5 days then taking the Colorado Mtn Express shuttle from the airport. We are from ATL and not very experienced in driving in snow. Are the roads pretty safe or should we consider letting someone else do the driving?

You will be fine. They keep I70 wide open and even if there is snow (not counting last week's blizzard) it is usually moving. Definitely easier to have a car--and you can go over to Vail to ski/shop/eat or shop the outlets at Silverthorne.

I'll add, it is only about a 2 hour drive also. Plus you don't have to do the stop that the shuttles ALWAYS do and tip the driver.

Thanks Gretch! OK we will get a car.

Roads are generally safe and I70 is among the first roads cleared when there are problems. Just use some common sense and caution. We were in Steamboat all last week and didn't have a problem in the "blizzard", but were extra carefull since we're not used to driving in snow either. Just make sure you get either front-wheel or, better yet, all-wheel drive. It makes a tremendous difference. Also, if the rent car doesn't have an ice/snow scraper in it (as ours didn't), get one as soon as you can for additional insurance.

I will add a caveat to the driving aspect. It can be treacherous as I've driven I-70 in pretty bad conditions a number of times and occasionally they do have to close the highway. Just remember to slow down and be sure to get a vehicle that can be driven in adverse conditions.
