Driving from Denver to Aspen Oct. 2
Can I drive the senic drive this time of year? Could there be snow that early? What should I stop and see on the way?
|
What is the scenic drive? Independence Pass? Probably yes. It is possible for snow that early on a high pass like Independence. You can check the status at --
http://www.coloradodot.info/projects...formation.html You have a number of interesting stops - Idaho Springs, Georgetown and Georgetown railroad off I-70, and a number of historical sites and building, including the Mineral Belt trail, in Leadville. |
We are in Aspen now. Because there is so much construction on I-70, including Glenwood Canyon, we took 285 from Denver, to Buena Vista and over Independence Pass.
It's a very pretty drive. Took us 4.5 hours from Denver, on clear roads with little traffic, at a leisurely pace. |
My favorite way to go through Glenwood Canyon is on the Amtrak California Zephyr. The train leaves Denver (new station) in the morning and arrives in Glenwood Springs mid afternoon.
This beats watching the pavement ahead of you instead of the scenery. There is a good bus service from Glenwood Springs to Aspen. Leave the driving to others if there is any threat of snow or ice. |
