driving from Dallas Texas to Orange County California

Hey all,

I am driving at the end of May (memorial day weekend) from Dallas Texas area to relocate back to Orange County California. I have two cars, an 85 pound Rottie and a 13 year old cat - they will be in different cars. My 17 year old daughter and her friend are driving one car and I will be in the other.

We are planning on leaving early on a Sat and making it all the way to Albuquerque.I have reservations right off the 40 at a pet friendly place - so I think we are good if we can make it all the way that day.

It is almost a 12 hour drive from ABQ to Orange County... I am not sure if I can pull it off with the stops for the dog etc... thoughts on where to stop on that second day ? I would like to make reservations (that can be canceled) in case we are fried...

We could do something fun and drive to Vegas (8.5 hours) but I am not sure if we are up for "fun" anyway...? And head to OC from Vegas... I have done that drive a ton...

I was just thinking, "Whoo hooo! I could meet you!" Then I remembered I'll be out of the country that weekend.

You could stop, if you need to, in Kingman, AZ. It's about 7 hours from Albuquerque. Needles is another hour west, but I don't stop there unless I really have to, and I don't like driving the two hours between Needles and Barstow at the end of a long, hot day unless I'm well rested.

Sorry, this isn't the trip to take a side fun trip to Vegas with 2 cars, dog, cat and 2 teens. Get to CA as quickly and easily as you can; trust me on this. At some point during day 2, you will be nodding your head in agreement, mumbling "What was I thinking...Vegas?? Get me to the OC!"

See you for dinner...

Memorial Day weekend? I'd certainly want reservations for the second night and assume I'd need the stop. Heavy traffic in places could make driving times a little longer.

The choice before Kingman is Seligman (Se LIG man). if you are tired of the Interstate you can drive the old Rt. 66 past Grand Canyon Caverns on the way to Kingman in the morning.
