Driving from Cincinnati to Washington , DC.

Along the logical route (70E to 76), can you think of anything especially interesting to stop to see? A cute historic town with a good restaurant? We could break the 8 hr trip into two days if so.

We know Columbus, Ohio, but am unfamiliar with the "special" places that may be a few miles off the route before getting to D.C.

Thanks for the help.

You might find more of interest if you were willing to drop down to I-64 and travel east through West Virginia

That's possible. We could go one way and come back another. What place could you suggest as a stopover or visit?

There is even less in WVA--nice state, but not there.

Is Winchester an interesting little town? Not too much of a detour. It rings a bell, but maybe this Winchester isn't THAT interesting?

Do you have a favorite website for small town America?

Harpers Ferry, WV is scenic and historically interesting.

Go from there to Point of Rocks, then take US 15 to Leesburg and Middleburg. This is the center of Virginia's horse country though Leesburg's proximity to Dulles is rapidly burying it in McMansion suburbs. See it while there may still be time.

Thanks so much. I have also seen that maybe the Cumberland area with the C+O visitor center might be nice then travel down to Alexandria that way.

We drove from Columbus to Washington in March via I-70 and I-64. Can't recommend there is much to stop to see, but the scenery should be very pretty in the fall. Do be aware that in eastern WVA and western MD (from Morgantown to Fredericksburg), THERE IS VERY LITTLE in the way of food or gas options. No kidding. We had plenty of gas, but had to wait 3 hours or so to eat lunch because we didn't know this, nor did we have snacks. Strongly suggest you take cooler with snacks and drinks, regardless of which route you take. Hope that helps!

really? Thanks for the tip. My mom is diabetic.. we always have snacks but had no idea it was so sparsely populated we could encounter that problem.
