Driving from Atlanta to Hilton Head?
 
I'm looking for an interesting place or two for a brief stop-over to break up a trip between Atlanta and Hilton Head.
I don't mind a bit of detour from the Highway, but no more than 20-30min. Some place either scenic or historical would be good.

Take 20 out of Atlanta and stop at Madison GA, one of the prettiest towns in the country. It's full of antebellum homes. Continue on to Savannah GA and stroll the squares of Savannah and maybe eat in one of the wonderful restaurants. Both are scenic and historical.

Why Hilton Head?
