driving from anchorage to valdez

i'm planning a trip to alaska for next summer and wondering about driving from anchorage to valdez, then taking the ferry to whittier. i have heard the drive is beautiful and that it would take a relatively full day at a leisurely pace.. any comments? thanks.

Yes, it's very beautiful, and yes, a full day.

Permit me to give a "I second that" to Gardyloo's statement.

Do an internet search for images with the term
richardson highway valdez
and you'll get some like this:

I don't know if you consider that "beautiful," but I sure do.

The road between Sutton and Glenallen has had many improvements the past few years – a new bridge and lots of road widening through the mountains. As of July the section around and east of Sheep Mountain Lodge is in rough shape but was being worked on. Beyond, the Glen highway has scattered frost heaves that will slow you down, especially if driving a camper. We made a half dozen trips to Glenallen this summer - plan on 4 or more hours, especially if you stop often and there is plenty of great places to stop. The Richardson is in good shape even through Thompson Pass. We typically make the entire trip to Valdez or McCarthy in one day but are wiped by the time we get there. I recommend you take time to stop at Worthington Glacier and walk the short trail to its face.

Most places on the Richardson between Glenallen and Valdez have closed even the gas station! So the best place to stay if you would like to break the trip up is in Glen Allen or perhaps in Copper Center or a cabin around Kenney Lake area. I don’t know much about Copper Center, but hear from friends there are some nice places.

Our trip photos to Valdez are posted at: http://childventure.com/adventurephotos/valdez/
