It's almost a straight run along of some 640 mile several Interstates (generally the quickest routings) so that is going to take you about 6 1/2 hours (+/- 15 or 20 minutes) no matter which routes you choose.

Try using Google Maps - the "directions" section will give you three different Interstate routings to choose from (but the difference between them is only 8 or 9 miles in distance and 10 minutes in average time). FYI - you can use the "click & drag" option to check out other potential routes using nearby State & County roads/highways but don't be surprised if using the secondary roads will take longer 9due to lower speed limits).

Looking at google maps it looks pretty straightforward. From NYC you'll take I95 to New Haven CT, then I91 north into NH.

What part of the mapquest route are you thinking is out of the way?

The answer is--it IS very very long. If it is 640 miles as the first poster said, I think it will take considerably longer than 6-7 hours.

It's not 650 miles - but around 350 - and listed as a 6 hour trip - but I think would be more - allowing time to get out of the city.

Not sure what faster way you want - Lincoln is the best part of the way to Canada - and it's just going to take a while to get there. And I think the slowest part if going to be getting out of New York. I mean - think how long it takes to get just from Brooklyn to Westchester by car.

Sorry my brain was saying around 350 but my fingers typed 650. Anyway, the rest of my post is on target. It's a straight route - not much you can do to shorten the time.

I have to jump in here with directions to Lincoln. I travel there quite a bit. I've drive from MA all the time. I've driven from Syracuse, NY, and Ithaca, NY.

First a caveat, I don't like google maps. I prefer bing.com/maps.

Now for you if you want the scenic route take Route 91 north from Hartford. If you want the quicker route go this way...from NY take I95 North to I91 to Hartford follow the signs to I84 East to MA/ I90 East. Take the Auburn, MA Exit to I290/ Worcester. Drive to the end of I290. Take I495 North to US Rt 3 North. US Rt 3 will merge with I93 in Hooksett, NH. Continue to Lincoln. Lincoln is ~1 hour from the Hooksett tolls. Have fun in Lincoln/ Woodstock.

Mapquest may give you the shortest route - it isn't going to tell you the best route if your plan is to drive when traffic can be bad. Such as a Friday night.

If driving at a time when traffic on 95 will be bad, I might suggest taking the Merritt as an alternative. In NY, the Hutchinson River Parkway connects into the Merritt at the Connecticut border. (Route 15.) It runs all the way up to New Haven where you can pick-up 91 north.
