Driving along Blue Ridge Parkway

Anyone drove latelty on this road in North Carolina? Any delays due to construction? Is rhododendron blooming already? What road would you suggest to take in order to bypass the sections which are still closed?
Thank you

Pat, you should check the National Parks website for current information on road closures. The rhododendron is already peaked in a number of places on the parkway. Right now it is on its way out, but take heart, the mountain laurel is gorgeous. If you are passing through VA to NC, lunch at Chateau Morrisette Winery would be an excellent stop for you. Great food.

There was an article in our paper Sunday that the Parkway is basically open all the way now.

If you don't mind getting off the parkway, Roan Mt, TN has some of the best naturally planted gardens of rhododendron you will ever see. They have a yearly festival (June18-19, 05). Check out their website www.roanmountain.com/. You can also walk along the Appalachian Trail at the base of the mountain over Hump Back Mountain and several other balds in the area which are also covered with rhododendron.

Thank you all for helpful information.

Photodog, we are going to be in that area at that time!!! Cannot find any accommodation for two nights or at least one. Would like to go on an early hike and it seems driving from Asheville is a little too long for a very early morning hike. Any suggestions where to stay overnight?
