We need help, want to see the coast stay at a good inn ,have only two days to do the journey.Isnt it about a 10 hr drive.We are in our 70s so 5 hrs is our limit to drive. thanks .

don't do it. You will spend most of it on I-5. The drive is 10 hours if you drive on I-5, if you drive the coastal route, it will take you much longer.

Actually - if you stay on the coast only as far as Coos Bay, and then up I-5 it is more like a 13 hour drive. That would be semi-hellacious in 2 days IMO

The more coast you see - the longer the drive. But even if you cut inland at Crescent City -- it will mean nearly 12 hours driving w/o stops.

From Ferndale? If that is what you mean, it is more than 10 hours from Seattle no matter which route you take, so no way to limit your drive to 5 hours a day. Even IF you could stick to the speed limit all the way and don't hit congestion/construction/weather the fastest you could do that drive is 11 or 12 hours w/o stops.

Also - when is this drive -- winter weather w/ snow will be soon upon us.

What is the rest of your itinerary like? Is Ferndale set in stone?

Yes afraid Ferndale is set in stone ,Mid Nov,is the time frame.would Eugene work do You think,this area of the country is unknown to us.Thanks for the info.

No offense to anyone from the Eugene area, but to me I would go a few extra hours to Portland. Since you went a little further the day before you would have a few extra hours in Portland itself.

There is no way to make this trip as you describe unless you exceed the speed limit most of the way.

If you are serious about dividing the two days of driving more-or-less equally, you will have to spend the night in or near Oakland, OR. There is a Best Western in nearby Sutherlin.

I think if you want to keep the driving time to a minimum, you need to just drive straight north right on the freeway. Skip the idea of going out to the coast.

panhandle's suggestion is good, but will have you driving MUCH more than 5 hours day 1. Ferndale to Portland is a <u>minimum</u> of 9 hours. You'd then have a shorter drive the next day - probably 3.5-4 hours if things go well.

Ferndale > Eugene (also not my choice) will take at least 7 hours.

Ferndale to someplace like Grants Pass will meet your 5 hour criteria --just barely. And then on to Seattle will take 6-7 hours the next day. So Grants Pass is probably your best bet.

That's the thing- you say you are unfamiliar w/ things out here. Well, it is a very big place. :)

Five hours per day is not enough; however it's easily doable in 6 hrs./day. Because of the need for speed, you'll have to take US 199 from Crescent City to I-5 near Grants Pass; from there you could make Cottage Grove in another couple of hours, so it would be around 6 hours for the first day. If you could tolerate one 7-hour day, the drive up the coast to Reedsport, then over the (very scenic) Oregon Route 38 to I-5 would be more enjoyable, but probably an hour longer all in.

Cottage Grove to Seattle is around 5 1/2 hours.

There are plenty of freeway-side motels near Cottage Grove.
