Around USA by Train. Is that a good idea?

I circled the country by Amtrak and would highly recommend it to anyone with patience & flexibility. Saw some of the most beautiful scenery in the country on this trip (much of it not visible from the road) and met interesting people from around the world. My rail trip was Seattle - L.A. - Orlando - Wash DC - Indy - Chicago - Seattle. There were numerous delays incl a 12 hr unplanned stop in Pensacola, FL waiting for a hurricane to pass. If your journey is more than 24 hrs and you can afford it, I'd suggest a sleeper car. Gives you more privacy, more quiet, all meals included, and most importantly a place to stretch out. Amtrak sleeper attendants are very polite, most go out of their way to make your trip a comfortable one. Amtrak also offers special zone fares which are much cheaper than regular fares, but plan ahead since these sell out quickly.

I've done several Amtrak cross-country and if you have time and patience, it's great. I totally agree with Terri, get a sleeper if you can afford on long hauls. The Coast Starlight from LA to Seattle has a special lounge car just for sleeper passengers and, as noted, all your meals are included. Also, try the Empire Builder and the CA Zephyer.
