drive through alaska end-april to early-may
 

Thanks for all the earlier replies!! Our trip is a bit clearer now. We're planning on getting into Anchorage around the 29th of april. Driving to Seward on the 30th. Then driving to Whittier on the 1st of may. After that, we're doing 2 nights in Talkeetna followed by a couple nights in anchorage before leaving for LA. Does this sound like a plan given that we can't change our travel dates to & from Alaska? My biggest concern is there being ice/snow on the roads. Please tell me those are unfounded concerns :) & we'll be pretty thriilled & rarin' to go!!! Looking forward to hearing from all who know!!

The last of our snow comes in March, so unless a very unusual system comes in, you are unlikely to encounter snow on the roads around Anchorage, by the end of April.
Driving north to Talkeetna, you might run into morning ice glaze in spots, and slow and careful driving is advised. There will be plenty left on the mountains though. Enjoy your visit.

If yuo run into ice hte key thing is NOT tostop. Once you have stopped it will be difficult to get enought traction to start again and have any control of hte car. If you see or feel (some of it is black ice)ice you should slow down (but don;t brake quickly, do it slowly) and drive slowly until you are off the ice. (I know stopping may seem like a good idea - but it's really bad and can get you stuck until it melts unless you have something to give you traction - sand, cat litter, cardboard, etc).
