Drive the California coast north to south or south to north?

That's great and especially that you got Yosemite View Lodge - much better of the two El Portal properties.
(the other El Portal place is the Cedar Lodge and while there is nothing wrong w/ it per se - no Northern Californians who have been around a while would ever EVER stay there. just too gruesome a history. Google will explain everything)

Go north to south. This will keep you on the ocean side for better views. It is safer as well since you won't have to cross the oncoming lane to get to the scenic pull-outs.
Going south to north you'll have to cross the oncoming lane to get to every ocean-side scenic pull-out. Sometimes this involves darting across the lane in the middle of a blind curve.
Not only will you see more while driving if you go north to south, you'll enjoy a less stressful exit and entrance to scenic overlooks...and there are many.

Good point. Be sure to use the pull-outs (I know you will).
So many tourists just pull over to side of road. Also be aware of the danger signs when standing on bluffs. These bluffs do crumble and we have tragic accidents every year.

I'm now back from my California trip and cannot overstate how wonderful everything was! We drove from Crescent City to San Simeon over 4 days (plus 2 nights in San Francisco) and had absolutely fantastic weather and views. The days were longer than expected because you really cannot go the speed limit for long stretches of California 1, especially north of San Francisco.
I'm still in shock that such narrow, steep, hairpin-turn roads are allowed without guardrails, but really, there's no room for them. The pavement is right on the edge of the cliff. I'm also in shock that people ride bicycles on that road, and that companies organize cycling tours. They must make their clients sign iron-clad waivers.
Thank you for all your advice, everyone!
