Drive from Seattle to Reno
 

The wife and I will be driving from Seattle to Reno.
We will be stopping to see Mt. St. Helens.
I'm thinking about taking I-5 to Redding, then taking 44 to 89 and see Lassen Volcanic National Park then on to Reno.
Any suggestions on this route, or should we be looking at another route?

If you haven't been to Mt. Rainier, that is a more spectacular place to visit than Mount St. Helens, and as I recall, the main attraction for the average person at Lassen NP is a hike to some thermal activity, which is interesting if you haven't been to Yellowstone and like to hike.

If you want to visit Lassen, you could do so without going to Redding by taking 89 south of Mount Shasta.

You could also bypass Lassen by taking 58 south of Eugene and hooking up with 97 to Klamath Falls, 139 to Susanville, and 395 into Reno. That route is 706 miles compared to 800 miles for the route you mention.

PS If you like small towns, Yreka is fun and there is a well-managed Holiday Inn Express there.

We are leaving Seattle Sept 10th. I think we will now not go thru Lassen Volcanic National Park.

If it is mealtime (any meal) as you approach Yreka, take the Central Yreka exit and, when you get to the bottom of the hill, go straight ahead...on your left you will see the Purple Plum restaurant. Park and eat. We never miss it on our trips to the bay area. Good Best WEstern there, too.

I agree with HTtY. Take Rt. 58 S of Eugene to get to US97.
South of Beaver Marsh, take Rt. 138 west to the north entrance of Crater Lake NP. Crater Lake has much higher marks in my book than Lassen.
You can make it to the Crater Lake/Diamond Lake area in 7 hours from Seattle. Exit Crater Lake NP on Rt. 62 east back to US 97 and go through K-Falls on the way through Susanville CA.
Unless the weather is bad, you can make it from the south entrance of Crater Lake through Susanville to Reno in 7 hours.
For a short detour off Rt. 58, turn off a little ways east of the tunnel to visit Salt Creek Falls which is the second highest in Oregon. You get to see these falls from the top looking down.
