Drive from MN to CA

My nephew and niece in Minneapolis want to drive out to visit me in SF. I know they want to do it as quickly as possible as they drove straight through with minimal stops from MN to NYC to visit my sister. So has anyone done it with minimal stops and how long will it take? I cannot recall exactly how long it took me to drive here from Chicago many years ago, but we did overnight stops and did some sightseeing. I'm trying to decide whether to encourage or discourage them form doing this. BTW my nephew won't fly so no need to suggest cheap flights, etc.

My family did this when I was 16 years old. We had 3 drivers and we went from So Ca to Wisconsin and stopped every night. We did no sightseeing at all - only stops were for gas, food, and occasional stops just to stretch out legs. It took us 3 days and 2 overnight stops. Of course, we left very early in the morning, around 5am, and stopped every evening around 6pm. The last day I remember we drove longer, but we were heading to our destination (family).

So, short answer? 3 days, 2 nights could do it. (Though I had an uncle who did the same trip in 2 days, no stops, driving 24 hours with 2 drivers.)

2,046 miles. Little traffic along the way, and speed limit mostly 70 or 75mph. So, it's about 25 hours of driving or a little more if you do 80mph.

I think it's possible to do it with just one night of hotel stay; if they start early enough 1st day, and expect to arrive late the 2nd, overnight in Laramie or Sinclair, WY. They also gain two hours driving west.

If they can do it with 2 o/n stays, then it's very easy and comfortable.

My sister - in - law and a friend drove nonstop from MN to CA in about 28 hours. They changed drivers and each slept while the other drived. Doesn't sound fun to me but they were young!!
