Driskill Hotel - Austin

Hi All,

We will be traveling from Africa to Texas next month and are considering the Driskill for our 3 days in Austin. I have read a lot of reviews and discussions on forums and they seem quite mixed but one thing I cannot find is a recommendation on room types. Some reviewers have said the rooms are very small or not worth the price etc. certainly the curio rooms do look very small on the website. I think I have read enough reviews to make an informed decision on the hotel and would just like to know opinions on room types.

I am looking at the Senate, Signature and Cityscape Rooms, can anyone recommend an actual room type please.

Thanks

Most of the rooms at The Driskill are small. We even stayed in a suite one time & both rooms were so tiny. It would have been better to have knocked down a wall & have a normal size room. Have you thought about The Four Seasons? Rooms are much better & it is located on Town Lake which I think is a much better location than the corner of Congress & 6th St. Sixth St has a few good restaurants, but is mainly bars. It also has a higher amount of crime, so be careful.

Another area which is really fun is South Congress. Check out Hotel Saint Cecilia. There is not anything like it in Austin.

Just some suggestions!

DriskillHotel I have emailed you and would appreciate your reply.

Topeater, thanks for your reply and suggestions. The more research I do on hotels the harder my decision is. We are traveling a long way and wanted a unique experience in Austin which the Driskill seems to offer. We only have three nights and want to see some good blues music at night so this area was recommended to us.

Hi Bwino,

The Driskill is historic and thus the small rooms. It is unique. You just have to know that it's what you want. There are lots of hotels in downtown Austin.

Here are a couple of links for clubs with blues in Austin. You can view their schedules online:

Have a great trip!

Rooms are small but service, location, bar and restaurant top notch. We ate there 2 nites ago. Our fave.

Another option is the W if in ur budget. Also great location, nice bars, close to restaurants.

Hi all, we have booked a room in the 1920's tower at the Driskill, bigger room and we still get to experience the historic older part. We are really looking forward to staying there and visiting Texas for the first time. We are staying in chain hotels in Houston and San Antonio so it will be great to stay here.

We will be sure to eat there Austin, any other restaurant recommendations in the area?

A really fun way to see Austin is on a Segway tour. Even though I spent many years in Austin at the University of Texas and married an Austinite, we both learned a lot about the city on the Segway tour we did with friends. The company we used was Segway Nation.

Manuel's on Congress Ave and about 2nd street. They have a happy hour 4-6 or 4-7. 1/2 price appetizers and drinks discounts. I like their food.

Venture to the other side of Congress (acros the river, into South Austin territory), now u are on/in SoCo. Love Homeslice Pizza, coffee at Jos, music at The Continental club and food from the Trailer Food Park (Hudson Mighty Cone)

Bwino, if you are up for Asian food I highly recommend Mekong River on 6th St, a short walk from the Driskill. It is a fusion of Vietnamese/Thai and it is fab. I especially love the Pad Thai, the Satay Chicken and the Chargrilled Pork Vermicelli Bowl.

Longhorn - thanks, we have marked the Segway tour down as a possibility.

Austin - thanks for the recommendations - appreciated.

P_M - love Vietnamese and love Thai so will look out for that one.

So much to do, so many places to eat, so little time.

We arrived in Austin late yesterday afternoon and the Driskill is really lovely. We are in the 1920's tower, the room is very nice, the bed sheets are divine. We had the four course tasting menu with wine pairings at the Driskill Grill and it was fabulous. Only complaint is there is no coffee in the room. Heading out for a look around today.

Bwino, welcome to Austin!!

I'm so glad you like the Driskill. I'm a little surprised there is no coffee in the room but I'm sure you've found the Starbucks across the street. I really hope you will enjoy your stay here.

Please see my thread about the GTG Saturday or give me a call tomorrow if you wish. See y'all soon, YEEHAWWWW!!!!
