Dressing to Travel from Frigid to Hot--how?

This is ridiculous I suppose, but how can I best dress for a 2-hour drive to the airport (by van service) in sub-zero weather and not die of the heat in the airport, on the plane, and at my destination? I can't leave winter things in the van...and I hate to carry all this stuff!

I wear a lightweight fleece type jacket. It's warm enough for the NYC area temps when I'm leaving and I either put it into my suitcase when I check my bags or just stuff it into the small backpack I carry on with me.

Layer! I wear sneakers with socks, a t-shirt, sweater, and raincoat, which may come in handy anyway. Also bring gloves. If your hands are warm it's much more comfortable, and they don't take up much space.

We have to leave this Thursday for a cruise flying from NY and I'm having my sons wear a t-shirt, long sleeved shirt and their blazers, saves space when packing too.

Don't forget to pack a bathing suit in your carry-on.

As already said, layers and always pack hat, gloves and scarf for return trip.

And leave that outside compartment of your suitcase empty (no matter how tempting to fill it). When you get to the airport, put your outer coat and hat into it. Pack same way on return, and when you retrieve your baggage you won't have to open the whole bag.

Funny story: we went on an Alaskan cruise - we live in Florida. My husband has a pair of those pants with zippered legs. He started in shorts, put the middle section on in Detroit airport, put the long pants on upon arrival in Anchorage. He loves those pants!

How much do you expect to actually be outside in the cold weather? Might you have to stand around and wait for a van or taxi? If not, I wouldn't worry about the cold. The van will be heated, won't it?

And -- packing light for cold -- hat, scarf, gloves, especially hat, are most important I think.

Go from Boston to Florida every year during winter and I wear a 3/4 length sleeve shirt, microfleece jacket, gloves, Dockers, socks and sneakers. I bring a pair of flip flops or sandals in my carryon and change at the airport or in the bathroom in the airplane.
You will be out of the cold for the most part. You will be outdoors for just a walk to the curb to pick up the van, and again to walk into the airport.
It isn't as tough as you think.
Enjoy!
