Dressing for the theatre

My dad and I are going to New York for the first time on Thursday. We have tickets for "Rent" on Friday. I heard that the dress for theatre goers is slightly more relaxed than in the past. Any suggestions on what would be appropriate to wear? Oh, and I always wear black anyway. Thanks in advance

The attire varies from jeans to furs. Black is always appropriate in NYC. I'd lean towards something nicer than jeans. A nice pair of pants or a skirt and a sweater are perfectly acceptable attire.

Went to the theater on Wednesday and Friday evenings last week. Both days were extremely hot and the greater majority of people wore casual dress. Not too many men wore jackets. I wore navy blue dockers and a short sleeve sports shirt on both occasions. These days anyone who dresses "to the nines" is the exception rather than the rule.

Since you are seeing the show "Rent", I can assure you that it is perfectly acceptable to dress down. That show is populated by a lot of young people and the subject matter almost invites you to dress casual.
