Dress code in Kauai
 

DH and I are leaving for Kauai in 3 weeks and DH is concerned about how to dress. We don''t go to many upscale restaurants when we travel but we might visit one or two. Would a pair of slacks and a shirt be OK, or is that even necessary?

An unrelated question, can anyone recommend a good luau?

Slacks and a shirt should be fine. Most of the time my husband wears a pair of nicer shorts.

Kauai is really laid back. Last year we were caught in a sudden rainstorm while on the beach. My hair was coated with sand and salt. Escaping the rain, we walked into a restaurant looking worse than drowned rats and no one cared or gave us a second look.

Slacks and shirt is fine for restaurants that are a bit more upscale spot.

P_M, we will be going to Kauai for our 7th time in March. DH doesn't even carry a pair of slacks any longer when we go. He will wear a nice pair of shorts and an aloha shirt to certain places, but even that isn't necessary.

So, where are you staying? And, what activities do you have planned? And, what restaurants do you have on your list?

If you are leaving in 3 weeks, you will just miss our friend, iamq...but, I'm certain you know that aleady.

About the luau...if there is a local one going on, go to it. Otherwise, the preferred luau is normally Smith's. We have friends that go there every year and never tire of it.

As for "dress code" - didn't know Kauai had one - except for weddings, funerals, etc.

A formal attire is a nice polo type or Hawaiian style shirt - and "dress" shorts, although I always toss a pair of grey or khaki trousers and a blue sport coat - or a white linen one - in the suitcase just in case you want to appear top drawer. :)

Also helps to wear a sport coat and slacks if you are trying to worm your way into first class. :)

We rarely wear anything fancier than nice shorts and tops, and my husband wouldn't bring a jacket to Hawaii if you paid him. Sometimes, he'll put on slacks and I might wear a sundress, but that is definitely as fancy as it gets for us.

There is now a dress code on that island? Does that mean closed toe flip flops or what?

OK so there is no strict dress code in Kauai, just as I thought. I already knew that but DH needed to hear it from those of you who have been to Kauai.

P_M, for those rhinestone studded slippahs, check out Tropical Tantrum...3 locations. Marriott Lihue, Kapa'a beside Pono Market, and in the Old School House building in Hanalei.

The only place I dress up is when I dine at Kauai Grill at The St Regis. I still don't wear my best ball gown, but I do put on a pair of shoes not made of rubber. Kauai is casual. That's what I love about it.

Joan, I might be convinced to put on leather flip-flops for the St. Regis!
