Hi again, so now I am now thinking Dream Hotel instead of 60 Thompson. I know it is not open yet, but wondering if any of you know the buzz on this hotel. I currently have a rate of $209 a night for 60 Thompson and a can get a rate of $215 or $245 for Dream through Quikbook.com. I am well under my budget so far and what little I can find out about Dream sounds great. Any feedback? Thanks!

I would caution against staying at brand new hotels. It is possible that (i) some or most of the facilities you are looking for like a health club, spa, restaurant, etc will not be completed even though the hotel is open, (ii) the hotel may not actually make its expected opening date and you will be scrambling to get a hotel room at the last minute (plus can you even get a refund from Qickbook?), and (iii) there are always teething problems with both new staff and a new or refurbished building that you may want to avoid (shower pressure, inadequate heating or cooling, untrained staff or inadequate numbers of staff during a pre-opening period). I would stick with 60 Thompson, very nice hotel and a very helpful staff in my experience.

I agree with cicerone's recommendation not to book a hotel that's not open yet. Not only do you have no reviews, but it might not be ready when you are! And if it's not completely ready, you can be sure that they will have given priority to getting the guest rooms open, rather than associated services, and then you'll have to deal with the mess, traffic, and noise of the remaining workmen.

Remember that Dream sounds great because the primary source of info is probably the hotel developers themselves.

I think you're going about this wrong way round. $209 for 60 Thompson is a great deal. Why muck around with that?? If you want to do the RC Battery Park for one night, yes it's nearby, but I wouldn't change the bigger part of the trip to an unknown/untried hotel.

There was another trendy place called the Alex that was due to open about a year or so ago. They were running so far behind on construction they started offering very low "intro" rates. People were miserable. You're coming from England. Stay someplace you know you'll like. If there's some other reason you're thinking of changing from 60 Thompson, tell us. Otherwise, I'd leave well enough alone. BTW, I reread some of the reviews of 60 Thompson on tripadvisor and people did have some views though not of the SOL. If you want a big view uptown, what about Parker Meridien. And they have an indoor pool.

Here's an update for anyone considering the Dream Hotel. After one year, it's already starting to show wear and tear. The rooms are tiny, as they are at most renovated boutique hotels, but I've seen them done better at places like the Mansfield. The hallways were dimly lite (atmosphere?)and hall carpet was stained. There was always a housekeeping cart or pile of laundry in the hall as well. The bar is a scene -- great if you're 20-something but not so great if you're 40ish and traveling on business.

We stayed at Dream last November (we had actually booked it unders its previous name and discovered the change on arrival).
The rooms were really small (about 2 foot spare around the beds). There was no safe or mini bar in the room as advertised - though this may have changed since then. We requested ice from room service on 2 occasions which never arrived. The bathroom was nice but tiny, it did have Molton Brown products though (sorry these things please me!). I think that the worst thing was that when bar on the top floor closed there was a lot of noise from drunk people spilling out into the corridor from the lift - they had either selected the wrong floor or the lift just stopped there. This woke us up most nights which is not pleasant when you are trying to fight jet lag.

The location is excellent, with a lovely small bar just along the street we went to a couple of times to avoid extortionate hotel prices!

We are returning to NY, next week but have chosen not to stay there again - it remains to be seen whether this will be a good decision or not!

I am so glad we didn't stay there in the end. We stayed at the Sofitel five nights and one night at the RC Battery Park. We loved both and would definitely stay at the Sofitel again.
