Drawbacks to convertible in Kauai?

Hi, we have a choice of renting a convertible or a midsize car -- both the same price -- in Kauai. Any drawbacks to taking the convertible? Will it be useful in Kauai?

Also, we might want to rent a kayak to kayak Wailua river one day, in which case a convertible would be a hindrance there.

Please advise. Thanks!

A convertible is fun on Kauai. The only problem we had two years ago was we had a Mustang Convertible and couldn't get out the road to Polihale. This year we are renting a mid sized SUV.

Not to mention the general misery of riding in a convertible--it always feels like someone's beating me around the head. Ugh.

We usually get convertibles in Kauai. Love the air and the sun, and the ac hitting us in the face. We have been blessed to put the top up and drive very carefully to reach Polihale and Griffins - just turn up the Jack Johnson or Garden State CD and do it island time.....but that is only on a recently graded gravel road. i2 is wise to rent an SUV as who knows what the road conditions are right now. Mustangs used to ride real low, we have only had Sebrings. Not sure about the newer Mustangs.

Oh, and if you are more than a couple - luggage can be a problem - unless you know how to pack island style!!!

Suggest you check under the floor mats before renting :S-

Marginal Apr 28th, 2009 01:03 PM

Oh, JohnD, that is a really good point!

GoTravel Apr 28th, 2009 01:33 PM

Most people not from a climate where the sun is strong get bad sunburns in convertables.

Mahalo nui loa, Marginal.

BTW, on our last Kaua`i rental, someone had previously taken the mats from our SUV, we were somewhat reassured by the low mileage and the fact it was not a convertible, but did not want to wait on line again #ofor an exchange.

I have rented nothing but convertibles on Kauai and loved every minute of them. Why should I look under the floor mats?
What am I looking for???

They're creepy and they're kooky
Mysterious and ooky
They're all together spooky,
The cockroach family!

I had to fist fight one over who got to drive....

We rented a few convertibles and ehhhhhh....could live without them.

Drawbacks to convertible in Kauai? There are none!

iamq Apr 28th, 2009 06:18 PM

That's cock-a-roach to you!

We have a convertible at home, so we're used to getting our hair mussed. We love them in Kauai.

JC98, I have the big question. What price are you talking about? I got several fantastic prices for a regular car for a week in Kauai, but every convertible quote I got was at least double. What company? What code? What magic formula? I'd love to have a convertible like I drive at home in Florida, but I haven't been able to find one I could afford in Hawaii -- on any of the four islands I'm staying on.

Kal Apr 28th, 2009 06:51 PM

Yeah...nuthin' like coming around a corner into a cloud burst with the top down. :((

Billaaaaay...I hate when the wind in a convertible musses my hair too.

iamq Apr 28th, 2009 07:02 PM

Kal, do you mean your ONE hair?

Kal Apr 28th, 2009 07:05 PM

Hey hey hey....that's cold...but funny! :))

iamq Apr 28th, 2009 07:24 PM
