Downtown Denver restaurant suggestions please
 

WIll be at the Adams Mark(1550 Court PL) for a week starting 11/20. Any suggestions for "good value" places. Even better would be early bird specials as we will be eating around 5PM-6PM.

Sorry, I don't have a suggestion for you. But I hope that someone who answers may know this. Several years ago I ate at an (upscale) Italian place downtown that had 3 stories of dining area. It was really good and I've never been able to remember what it was called. Anyone know it? Is it still open?

That's early for some restaurants, but not for the Denver Diner on the corner of Colfax and Speer, not far from your hotel. That's all it is, a diner (no booze), but a huge menu, good prices and exceptional fish 'n chips...

Then there's Bayou Bob's on Glenarm just up from 16th Street (pedestrian mall), just past the theatre, on that side. Enter left, there's the bar, go right, there's the restaurant - friendly, laidback, Nawlins style of course.

Ted's Montana Grill at 1401 Larimer Street in LoDo (Lower Downtown) has the best buffalo burgers and other good fare. It's casual but just a bit upscale - they're in many places, you may know them.

You'll find many restaurants of all types and stripes along the pedestrian mall of 16th street. Try to ignore the riffraff...

Go easy on cocktails and wine at first, the altitude makes some people feel it more quickly than they'd like it...

Wazee Superclub on the corner of 15th and Wazee for an inexpensive dinner, know for good pizza. Also My Brother's Bar, on 15th and Platte. This place is know for great burgers, but a little iffy service, pub atmosphere.

Not sure about early bird specials, but pick up a copy of Westword when you get in town. This is a free weekly Denver newspaper that will have some ads for dinner specials.

You can go to the Pavilions outdoor 'shopping center' on the 16th street mall for restaurant choices. There's a deli/bakery place in there, on the ground level, that has good and very reasonably priced breakfast pastries, sandwiches, soups, salads. I forget it's name-- something like The Corner Bakery-- but you'll find it easily. Also a Maggiano's Italian and Hard Rock cafe in the Pavilions. Directly across the street is another sandwich/deli whose name I can't remember (the Paramount?).
Larimer Square has dining, too, as Ted's has already been mentioned for its great bison burgers. (Avoid Lime, unless you want a smoky bar scene with very mediocre food.) Tamayo's is higher priced, but good Spanish food, on the corner of Larimer.
Cheesecake Factory is in the Tabor Center, down the street, which has such a huge menu you'll always find a deal there. (Look for Renee's Special, a half sandwich and soup or salad.)
The Wynkoop Brewery, down by the train station, has good food and great brews for reasonable prices. And The Wazee, already mentioned, is always fun.
For a semi-splurge, we like the Denver Chophouse, also in LoDo. Very good food and service in an historic building. Not over-priced, though not cheap.
You will have so many choices downtown, don't worry. You can also take a very short cab ride to The Avenue Grill, on 17th Street. One of my favorite places for a very nice, low key but dressy atmosphere with great service, food and value. (Had lunch there yesterday for a special friend's birthday, in fact.) Or the more upscale Strings, also on 17th, for a splurge lunch or dinner.
Ask at your hotel and you'll get lots of ideas, too. Even fast food joints on the 16th street mall, if that's what you want. Enjoy Denver.

Maggiano's Italian restaraunt is 1 block from the Adams Mark. Price per person $22-$32, but you get large portions and it is very good.
Exit the door onto 16th Street and turn left. Walk to the middle of the next block, and there is a movie theater sign. Turn left at the sign and enter a recessed shopping area. Maggiano's is in inside this little shopping area.

Inside the Adams Mark is Bravo Restauranti. It is fine dining and more expensive. When I was there, the waiters took turn singing opera and other tunes.

Pinnecale Club in the Hyatt is way overpriced for the meal, good 38th floor view. The Palace Arms in the Brown Palace is very good, but very expensive and heading toward overpriced.

Hey, Denverites, the best upscale dinner you'll have is at Elway's. Absolutely wonderful. And their wines are excellent and not marked up excessively.

The Italian place might have been Al Fresco's? I like the quiet restaurants in Hotel Teatro, but the action is definately on the ped. mall. I think just about everyone serves dinner starting at 5 to 5:30, lots of people like to eat early, esp. if theater is planned.

thndrstm-I had posted a similar post earlier about Denver dining, might find it helpful. We chose to dine at
Mizuna's while we were in Denver in Oct, and while the food was "good", kind of overpriced and overrated and this place was out of the way. However the lobster macaroni & cheese was really worth ordering as they recommended.

Thx, I see an intersting deal on the internet for Bravo's, you purchase a $25 certificate for $10 but you must buy 2 entrees. With the recomendation here, maybe its worth a try. There is similar deals for Limes and 9th door nearby.

I'm not sure if the restaurant is still there - we moved from Colorado quite a while ago -- but we used to eat at Josephina's and the food was wonderful. It's in the Larimer Square area (or was).

I thought Josephina's was a Mexican restaurant up on 16th.

Gretchen -- it was an Italian restaurant in Larimer Square. I Googled it, and it seems to be there still.

Yes, Josephina's is now closed. In it's place are two new restaurants. One, which is Italian is Rioja. It is getting Best of Denver type reviews. We haven't gotten a chance to try it yet, but the chef came from Panzano (also downtown and excellent) and she is really special.

connette -- I used to love going into downtown to do a little shopping followed by lunch at Josephina's. That's a shame.

It's not downtown, or in Denver for that matter, but have you been to Gabriele's in Sedalia? That's good food.

No I haven't - but I have heard it is good. We have only been to Sedalia once on our way home from the Renaissance Festival where we dined at an exclusive biker bar! Now that was special. It was a bit early and that was the only thing open. We will just have to try Gabriele's next time.

connette -- was that Bud's Bar? We never ate there, but their hamburgers were supposed to be terrific.

We still compare restaurants to Gabrielle's. It is so good.

Yes, I believe it was and we did have hamburgers and they were very good. Atmosphere +++
