The drive is very beautiful and is an attraction by itself.
Make SURE to have a full tank of gas--gas stations along the way are practically non-existant. We stayed at the Princess Lodge by Copper Center. I would highly recommend that place to anyone. Have a wonderful trip.

i had posted this in your response to another post:
"i certainly hope you have already made your reservation for the ferry MV Chenega for the Saturday before Labor Day, as they currently filled up for vehicles for that date. also, you might want to do a little homework, as i believe the main museums in Anchorage will be closed on Labor Day."
there is another sailing from Whittier to Valdez on Monday,Sept 3 -but that sailing will cost over $100 addition from the Saturday sailing.

When we were in Alaska 3 years ago, the highlight of our trip was 2 days in Kennicott & McCarthy in the Wrangell St. Elias Mountain range. We left our rental car at the Princess Lodge at Copper Center & took a shuttle over the McCarthy Rd. & spent 2 nights at the Kennicott Lodge. Toured the Kennicott Mine, hiked Root Glacier, took a flight seeing trip & hiked up to Bonanza Mine. Beautiful, true Alaskan experience.
