Down East

My 19 yr old and I are flying from dc to Boston, meeting DW and 16 yr old at end of college tour and driving up to a rental house near south addison. Are there any restaurants, movie theaters, drug stores in south addison? Must be something. Wikipedia says 1000 people live there.

The house is really pretty, I think, and we have kayaks and bikes, but I'm wondering about what there is to do. We have a night in Boston and another night in route. We'll all drive back together to dc after the week at the house. If anybody knows the area, where do you like to go to hike, swim, eat? What would be a nice stop between Boston and South Addison on a Friday? Thanks!

I would think Portland Maine would be approx half way between Boston & S Addison? We recently spent a whole weekend in Portland and ate very well...

Even if you don't do anything else in Portland, just a stop at Duck Fat for the fries is worth the stop. Just thinking about the fries makes me drool. http://www.duckfat.com/

South Addison is near Jonesport, north east of Bal Harbor and Acadia. Not much turns up in google. Gosh, there might not even be a Starbucks. Good lobster I think.

Thanks YK. I think south addison is about 6 hours from Boston, 5 hours from Portland. Portland sounds like fun to explore. Duckfat fries sound good.

Wow, I just located South Addison, Maine on GoogleMaps. How did you choose it in the first place?

It has a wonderful rental house. I'm beginning to think we'll have plenty of time to enjoy it. The night life of downtown South Addison shouldn't be a distraction...

A good halfway point between Boston and South Addison would be any of the towns along the western side of Penobscot Bay -- Rockland (Farnsworth Art Museum, great restaurants), Camden (lotsa shops), Belfast (funky proto-hippie). Reservations strongly recommended. Samoset Resort in Rockland has swimming, golf, etc.

In South Addison, you might want to visit the studio of the well-known painter John Marin on Cape Split. Otherwise it's a very quiet part of the world, lots of good hiking, kayaking, star gazing, etc.

Thanks CoastWatcher. Whatever it is, we'll have fun.
