Doubletree Guest Suites - Boston
If anyone stayed at this hotel could you please tell me if you liked it. What about the parking? Is it in walking distance to the T? We are planning to visit Boston in August.
Thanks
|
Chris-what location in Boston? There are now 2 or 3 locations.
|
I'm looking at the Bayside or Cambridge Doubletree Hotels. Which are is a better place to stay. Thanks

Your best option is to stay at the Doubletree at 821 Washington Street, which is very close to Tufts University Dental School, the theatre district, Boston Common, and Chinatown. And, yes, you are very close to a T stop. The hotel is relatively new, and don't be concerned about the noisy location, as the windows are thermapane and you won't be able to hear a thing from the street as long as the windows are closed. I would guess that this hotel has parking as it has easy access to the Mass. Pike.

The Doubletree in Cambridge also has parking. It's not near a T-stop, but the hotel may have shuttle service to the T or a bus stop. This location is slightly out of the way, and right at the junction to the Mass. Pike and Storrow Drive.

I don't know anything about the Doubletree near the Bayside Exposition Center, but this would be my last choice for sightseeing in Boston unless you need to be in very close proximity to the JFK Library.

By the Cambridge Doubletree, do you mean the one on Soldier's Field Rd across the river from Cambridge (the hotel is actually in Boston)? This one is NOT convenient to the T, but maybe they have a shuttle to the nearest stop?
The Bayside location is just down the street from the JFK/UMASS subway stop (definately walking distance). It's located next to the Bayside Expo Center and just down the road from the JFK Library and UMass Boston campus.
Both hotels are pretty isolated as far as having a "neighborhood" with restaurants/shops etc. nearby, but if all you're looking for is a place to sleep after touring Boston, either place is fine. I'd choose the Bayside location if being near the T is important to you. Have fun!

Leslie beat me to it! Was also going to mention the Washington Street location right in the city.

bm, great minds think alike.

The Doubletree Guest Suites on Soldiers Field Road is actually in Allston (so annoying that it's named Doubletree Guest Suites Boston!). The nearest subway stop is Harvard Square, just under a mile away. There is parking (no valet, you park yourself). For some reason, the tickets they give you at the front desk do not work very well and we had to get someone to release the gate (as did nearly everyone else) from the garage every time we left. There is no luggage assistance. We were given a key to the mini-bar when we checked in, but there was no mini-bar in our suite. The decor was a bit "worn", but the suite was otherwise comfortable. We were on the river side, so the views were nice. Note that "last call" in the bar is rather early. We did enjoy a fine dinner in the hotel restaurant, although the dining room was freezing (this was in November). We've never stayed at the Doubletree Bayside, which is actually in Dorchester, just down from the Bayide Expo. The nearest subway stop is under 1/2 mile away (JFK Library/UMass). We have stayed at the Doubletree Downtown, which is brand new and nice enough (got a rock bottom rate through www.hotwire.com). This one is a block east of the theatre district. It's right next to a hospital, so you here sirens of ambulances all night if you're a light sleeper.

Has anyone stayed at the new Doubletree Hotel Boston on Washington Street? I made reservations there for July because it was the least expensive 3-star I could find: $130 for the AAA rate. Is it convenient to seeing the sights of Boston?
|
Donna, since Allston is part of Boston (as is Dorchester), why do you find Doubletree's name "annoying"? But it does sound like the place has other annoying features, thanks for the insights about service (or lack thereof).

Of the 3, Downtown is definitely the most convenient for tourists.

Susan, We stayed at the Doubletree on Washington last December. It was perfect for our needs. It's right next to a T stop and walking distance to downtown and Chinatown. I see that you are going in August. I'm not sure if a pool is important to you but when we went to look for the pool it was across the rooftop and I believe part of the YMCA. We didn't need parking but a friend came to visit and he paid about $20 to park at the New England Medical Center right next door. They let us check in at 7AM. We'd stay there again.

Thanks for everyone's help. So far I have it narrowed down to 2 Doubletree locations: Washington or Bayside (for free parking). I also got a price of $116 for the Hilton which is a very good price considering the other prices I've seen. The only bad part is the $28 for parking. Thanks again, still looking for suggestions or thoughts.
