Door County, WI lodging
I am going to be staying two nights in Door County the first weekend in October (Sat and Sun nights). I would really like to keep to under $100 a night. Should I go ahead and book something now or do places in that area start offering specials closer to the date?

Not sure about Door County but in northern MI, that is leaf-peeping season. I suspect rooms will be very scarce.

Don't know about the need to book ahead, but here's a possibility on the Lake Michigan ("quiet") side:

We liked it just fine a couple of years ago. It's on the old fashioned funky knotty pine cabin side, up on a hill with nice view of the Lake and a good coffee house a block away.

It has been our experience that Door County rarely has trouble keeping their rooms filled up and so it is not a place that offers a lot of special rates. Normally if we don't book far enough in advance we find we are not able to stay at our favorite places.

That being said, this year may be different. The price of gas may have impacted the tourism in the area.

My advice would be to book early.

We visit Door County somewhat frequently. A few years ago, we decided not to make reservations ahead and just see what we found once we got there. We ended up driving all the way to Green Bay before we found a place to stay. My advise is book as far in advance as you can.

Thank you for all of your comments. I just book the Inn on Maple in Sister Bay for two nights. :)
