Door County - Scandinavian or Birchwood

has anyone stayed in these places- I'm looking for something in late June and there's availability at both

I'm Scandinavian, so during a visit to Door Co., I hopped out of the car and went inside the place......and I was kind of disappointed. It just looked like a big open barn, kind of bare, nothing like I was hoping. Although, that was about 8 yrs ago, so perhaps it's different now. Haven't stayed at the Birchwood, but just yesterday I happened upon the website (searching for a different Birchwood resort), and I thought it looked pretty cool! Don't know if this helped at all.....but noticed no one had replied.

just returned yesterday from a 4 day stay at the Birchwood. Beautiful accomodations, inside and outside pools, and a very nice staff.

wish I'd heard from you earlier- I ended up getting a room at Homestead, my first choice anyway, but Birchwood was a close 2nd- where do you recommend we eat? We don't want fancy, casual will do

Door County is full of eating establishments. We have eaten at many and most have been good. Wilson's is a historic hamburger joint, Villagios is a new Italian place and has good food. We have been to 11 fish boils at 6 different places. The most disappointing was the White Gull Inn. Very overrated. They didn't serve onions (my favorite part), the fish was filleted differently and extremely mushy and full of bones - nearly unedible. Also, the cole slaw had not marinated long enough and was tasteless. I have heard the White Gull Inn does wonderful breakfasts. The best fish boils are The Olde Post office and The Square Rigger. I wouldn't worry about where to eat. You will probably just eat close to where ever you are. Also, all the inns have menu books, so you know ahead of time the costs. Door County tourism has been down the last few years. Very few reservations are needed - just for the fish boils.

I second the thumbs up on Wilson's
AND the thumbs down on The White Gull Inn fish boil. We went looking for ice cream afterwards because we found our fish too bony to eat and much of the meal just ok. I am also a fan of the swedish pancakes at Al Johnson's.
