door county
We have a wedding in Northern Indiana this fall. We are considering going to Door County or elsewhere before the wedding. this would be about October 20th. Looks like we might be a little late for fall foliage but of course no one really knows that yet. What are some recommendations of where to home base...Sturgeon, Oshkosh, etc? We would enjoy golfing etc but will be with another couple and that will not work. So mostly we will just relax, do a little browsing, possibly a museum, sightsee etc. what are some recommendations for a place to stay and things to do in the area. Thanks much

No expert here but we did spend a week in Door Co. awhile back. Don't think this is a place for much activity in October but may be wrong. And don't remember any museums. This is a place for the arts (stage, music) in the summer and all year you can find craft shops. Where we stayed was at Wagon Trail, Rowley Bay.

The last big festival of the season is the Sister Bay Fall Fest Oct 17-19, http://www.cometosisterbay.com/festi...nts/fall-fest/.
Home base: stay in Door County farther up the peninsula in Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay. All quaint towns to stay in and on the side of the peninsula with more to do. Oshkosh is 2 hours away. You will have a lot of driving though between Indiana and Door County.
There's still plenty of shops open at that time, ferry to Washington Island and if you're a lighthouse buff you can climb Cana Island or tour Eagle Bluff in Peninsula State Park. btw - views of Lake Michigan from Peninsula State Park golf course are gorgeous.
And as you are in Packer country, the Lambeau stadium tour in Green Bay (1 hr south) is interesting if you're a fan.

Door County is one of my favorite places to go. I wasn't sure if all the shops would still be open but I Googled my three favorite galleries and they are all open through October or later. I agree with DoorCountyGirl that you'll want to stay farther up the peninsula. The towns up there are relatively close together and you can easily drive from one to the other, which is just what most people do. Sturgeon Bay does not have the same ambiance.
If you want to break up the drive from Indiana to Door County you might consider Cedarburg. It is a quaint town not too far north of Milwaukee. It is built along a creek and has a winery, galleries, pottery, shops, restaurants and antiques. It’s a nice place for shopping or a stroll. The Washington House Inn is a nice B&B if you decide to break op your trip.
Heading farther north we love to stop at Kohler. Being golfers, you may know it because of the American Club’s Whistling Straits Golf Course that hosts some PGA events. We browse the Shops of Woodlake, eat lunch there at Cucina’s (although I am told there are many other good restaurants at the American Club Resort). We also enjoy checking out the displays at the Kohler Design Center across the street. The basement houses a small museum, the first floor displays their mostly high-end products and the second floor has kitchen and bathroom design vignettes.
The John Michael Kohler Art Center is located in nearby Sheboygan. It is a small but very well run museum. Strange as it may sound, you need to check out the restrooms. They are pretty unique and people often crash the bathrooms to see the intriguing designs. Really.
I think you'll find lots of things to do that fit your criteria. Have a great trip.
