"Don't Tell Mama"?
 

Do any of you New Yorkers know if the piano bar Don't Tell Mama is still around? I think it is/was sort of across the street from Joe Allen. I recall it was a fun place and would love to go back when I visit in May, if it's still there...??

Yes, it's definitely still there, with the same types of programs and entertainment.

And there are actually two venues at Don't Tell Mama. There is a back cabaret room with regular "shows", and I've always been disappointed as most of them are during regular Broadway showtimes rather than something you can see after a regular show. But the front room and bar is lots of fun with a variety of performers, some of them bartenders or servers who often have an amazing amount of talent, and a real spirit.

I wasn't aware of the cabaret area, and it doesn't sound worth checking out either. The bar part with people singing sure was a hoot though! Lots of talent and just plain fun. I'm glad to hear it's still there. Thanks for the replies!

And if you like that, make a trip down to the Village to Marie's Crisis -- more fun than anyone should ever be subjected to without medical supervision.

Actually the Cabaret at Don't Tell Mama's is ABSOLUTELY worth checking out. They bring in some of the best local talent. Karen Mack, often performs there, she was voted the best cabaret performer in NYC the last 2 or 3 years. She brings in other very talented people to her show, so it's always different and her voice is amazing.

Yes, I hope you didn't focus on my use of the word "disappointing" as if it had anything to do with the shows. I was referring to the fact that I can never see Cabaret shows because at 8 I am at a regular theatre. The only show they generally do after theatre is a Judy Garland impersonator.
But if you aren't going to the theatre some night, a cabaret show at Don't Tell Mama could be fun. They also do some 6:30 shows, but I'm not sure if they're just an hour to let you out in time or not.

Yes Marie's Crisis would be a good place to go after the theater but it's in the village so not so geographically desirable. But there are a number of piano bars around town that are good for later in the evening. Speaking of which, has anyone ever tried Danny's Skylight or something or other also on rest. row? For some reason I've never been there.

We always go to Marie's Crisis after a show -- but after an offBroadway one in the Village. Some of the best theatre in New York isn't on Broadway.
