Don't Plan on Hiking the Narrows this Spring
I knew southern Utah was having a big snow year too (besides the Wasatch), but on the news last night they said the mountains that feed the Virgin River are at 178% of normal snow pack. That's a lot folks, not unheard of, but a lot.
That means you should not expect to be able to hike The Narrows in Zion anytime soon this spring. ALWAYS check with the visitor's center or a local ranger/forest office before heading out into the Utah wilds. Don't put off a trip to Zion - there are plenty of other hikes just as spectacular! Plenty to keep you busy and tired. Best time to hike The Narrows is fall, or summer on days when no thunderstorm activity might affect the river - and the rangers say OK to go! |
I wonder what I can expect Bryce and Cedar Break to be like by Memorial Day?

spiro,
Once the weather warms up, the snow melts pretty fast. You should be just fine by Memorial Day. There might be some some on the small UT highway that goes around Cedar Breaks. It's pretty high altitude and I've encountered deep snow there around mem day..roads were fine and dry. Some of the campgrounds above 8,000 ft. don't open until 4th of July on a fairly regular basis, but that's in the highest mtn ranges. |
PS - the creek below my house in Park City went out of its banks today! This is only the 2nd time in 11 years I've seen it flood.

Last April when we were there they weren't allowing hiking in the Narrows because of high waters but there is plenty to do in Zion without the Narrows. Going again this April! ;)
