Doner Kababs in Manhattan?
 

Is there anywhere in Manhattan to find a doner kebab? Turkish, I believe it is, a sort of sandwich of thinly sliced lamb wrapped in pita or naan bread, lots of veggies, cucumber sauce, and very hot chili sauce. <BR><BR>In London there were stands that sold them as a sort of "on the go" type meal. I miss them terribly and will be in NYC in a month or so. Last trip I was under the false impression that doner's were Indian. Had a cabbie drive me to a place (in the Battery? Bowery?) with umpteen Indian cafes, we had a great meal but, alas, no doner kababs.

Try Bereket @ 187 E Houston St.; cross street is orchard. The kebabs are quite good, although the sauce there is not particularly hot. The place is open quite late, so it's a good post-carousing spot.<BR>

I too love the lowly doner. Any other suggestions where they can be had in Manhattan? Is there an area for Turkish/Middle Eastern foods?

Bereket, Bereket, Bereket! The kebabs are great as well as the lamajhan (sp? -- sorry if I mutilated that one)...

It's basically just a gyro. Oh, and it's more like lamb parts reformed into a giant ball of meat, then left to stand on the skewer for several days.

It ain't pretty, but a tried and true gyro place is on 7th Avenue b/w 34th & 33rd. It's called Gyro 2 and has been there for at least 25 years. Great sauce and Greek fries. <BR><BR>If you want something a little fancier, try the Olive Branch on MacDougal St., in the vicinity of 6th St. or so.

What you describe is exactly what I had for lunch on Friday (yum!), at a small Lebanese takeout place in the Village. I've never heard them called doner kebabs - they are known here (at least in Lebanese restaurants) as shawarmas. I don't remember the name of the place but it's on Sullivan or MacDougal between W 3rd and W 4th Streets - just south of Washington Square Park.

They're Turkish. There was a thread about Turkish rest. in Manhattan. You can sure for it when the search function reappears. There was about six different places recommended. Enjoy!

Merilee:<BR><BR>The place you mean is Mamoun's (on McDougal weher Suzanne said)which is best known for their falafel although they do have other sandwiches. There are several other Middle Eastern restaurants on that block as well. <BR><BR>I live in NYC and have heard of doner kebabs but have never had one. I just found out the place I went is Ali Baba's, right across the street from Mahmoud's. I hear they have the same type food but Ali Baba's is less busy. <BR><BR>Yes, there are three or more such places right on that block of MacDougal. There were NYU students sitting all over front stoops eating their shawarmas and falafel.
