Done the search..E.Village NY Hotel
 

My 14yr old son, my husband and myself will be in NYC for 3 nights/4 dyas at the end of Sept. We'd like to stay in the east village and have searched for decent rates. We can swing probably $200.00 a night and are looking for an interesting hotel. We saw a website for the Bleeker and Morton St. hotels but can't find any Fodors comments about them. <BR><BR>Anyone familiar with them or can anyone recommend some cool, different but CLEAN hotel for our fun get-away?

I don't think you are going to find many hotels in the EAst Village. If you do find something it is likely to be an older tenement building converted to a hotel. I agree with the above. I spend ALOT of time in the E. Village and have never seen a hotel for a family. If you stay anywhere on the east side of Manhattan, particularly near the 4-5-6 subway line, you'll be within 10 minutes of the E. Village.

I doubt there is anything in the East Village that would be okay, and I lived there for almost 30 years.<BR><BR> I encourage you to check out the Gramercy Park Hotel. It is eccentric, beautifully located right on the park, and one neighborhood away form the East Village--a nice 20 minute walk, or a walk and a busride across 14th Street, or a subway form 23rd/Lex to Astor Place.<BR><BR> It's one of the remaining quirky one of a kind nice-ish hotels in New York. There was a sensationalized article about it not long ago in New York Magazine (about problems in the family that owns it, but you learn about the hotel too). I used to stay there when the heat went off in my East Village apt.

I will be in the area on Saturday so I can stop and take a look see, but honestly since none of us have heard of them the chances are they are SRO or student and not what you are looking for. <BR><BR>I would also suggest the Soho Grand as in a great location to see the city, close to everything and a very nice hotel.<BR><BR>There are a few hotels further toward downtown/wall street area, and I know they were offering great rates to encourage people to come back downtown. I think there is a new Hilton or Sheraton in the area. The Marriott of course is "gone", but there was a new hotel that opened at the begining of the year that looked nice, and is right on the water. Should have some great views.<BR><BR>Do you know the exact address of the Bleekerand Morton ST. hotels, that might help a bit.<BR><BR>Staying in the city on the weekends you can sometimes get a better rate than during the week.<BR><BR>Hope this helps.<BR><BR>tweedy

Friends of mine were very happy with SECOND HOME on 2nd Ave and 13th Street. Is that too far uptown for you?<BR><BR>They shared the tribal room which is on the second floor and has it's own bathroom. I believe the other two or three room on that floor share a bathroom. OK, you guys are going to have a good laugh at my expense on this one. First of all, I obviously know nothing about the different NY neighborhodds..I'll admit that right now. I screwed up this post big time because the 2 hotels I mentioned are in the West village! No wonder you east villagers may not be familiar with it. Sorry for my mistake. Thanks for the information though and if anyone knows a cool, kinda funky clean hotel in the $200.00 a night range in the W village, please let me know..

I live in the village. There are no hotels in the E. Village (maybe some very small and unappealing ones, but I don't know of any). ALso, not aware of anything on Bleecker or Morton St. I think there is an apartment building on Bleecker that does vacation type rentals. I can't remember the name off hand but if that's what you saw, it's fine. Morton is a small street, mostly brownstones, maybe a private bed & breakfast but again, nothing that I am aware of. Washington Sq. hotel is pretty much the only Village hotel and ina wonderfull location. It's cute from the outside but I hear some of the rooms are dark and small. The attached restaurant is very good and fairly reasonable. There's also the Larchmont Hotel on 11th St, also a great location, it's supposed to be nice but I beleive it has shared baths. As far as more upscale hotels, the Soho Grand, as mentioned is very nice. The holiday Inn and off soho suites are more lower east side, a little out of the way and the neighborhoods are not all the greatest depending on which direction you walk. Gramercy Park is very run down and not in the Village. About 10 blocks from the northern end. Another nice hotel is the Union Square W, it's a little closer than Gramercy and a very nice place. I don't know if you can get rooms there or Soho grand for $200. Expedia.com sometimes has good deals to those hotels. Wall Street/Battery Park is a bit out of the way. A good 40 min walk to the Village. If you can afford Soho Grand, that's a great choice, if not, Wash Sq. is probably adequate, but has a great Village location.

I have stayed at the Grammercy Park a number of times and loved it.

There is a hotel called 60 Thompson owned I believe by a Singapore company, very cool and well-located, in an area one could consider Soho or the Village. I've been there. Elegant. Very high prices listed on the Net, but I'd call them or look for them through discount places. <BR><BR> I have stayed at Washington Square and the Larchmont. W Square rooms can be bad, or not; location is spectacular. I loved the Larchmont, but it's definitely pensione-like, with shared (very very clean) bathrooms. Also in a great location.

I hated the Gramercy Park Hotel. Too much money for a dirt-bag room.<BR><BR>That place is past its prime.

I live on Morton St. and am unaware of any hotel on the street. There is an NYU dorm on the corner of Morton and Greenwich called the Grennwich Hotel, could this be what you are thinking of?

Have you tried the Sofitel? That place is great. And the nightly rate can be as low as 189 a night. It's not the village, but it's not that far away by train or taxi.

Hi, it's me again...the one who recommended Second Home. I was talking with co-workers who live in the east Village, and they also suggested the East Village bed and coffee (www.bedandcoffee.com). It's on Ave. C b/w 7th and 8th Street.<BR><BR>

I have also heard that Gramercy park Hotel is well past its prime. A friend stayed there two years ago and described it as "okay but a bit worn out". If you're working on a budget places like Soho Grand and 60 Thompson may be too pricey. There is a new Holiday Inn Express that opened qite recently on Houston Street. It's a brand new facility and looks as though it may be basic but very nice. It's on the south side of Houston and I believe the corner is 2nd Ave or 3rd Ave - just a few doors away from Jonah Schimmel's Knishes and the new Sunshine movie theater (great art film venue). Lots of good restaurants nearby and the subway is a few hundred yards away. Worth looking into.

The bed and coffee place on av. c mentioned here is shared baths. If you are going the shared bat route, i think Larchmont is a better bet.

No more suggestions! Sandi made a mistake as she has posted. She meant WEST village, not EAST village. Huge difference, but if you're not familiar with New York neighborhoods its forgiveable!

Just an FYI for those reading this thread...the new(ish) hotel on Houston (around 2nd ave) is a Howard Johnsons, not Holiday Inn.
