DOLLAR RENT A CAR-Logan Airport
 

Anyone have good? bad? experiences with this company at Logan please? Am picking up and dropping off. Thanks.

We just got back from Boston and used Dollar at Logan. We had good service, and were even bumped from a Kia Sportage to a Grand Cherokee when we politely asked. The best part of the experience was after we dropped off the car. I discovered I had left one of my bags (filled with mostly junk but also my camera) at the counter. My husband rode the shuttle bus back to the rental hut and they had already put my bag aside and were waiting for us to return. <BR> <BR>One thing, the rental cars are off-site and you have to ride a shuttle. On the way to pick up our car, the shuttle van broke down. Fortunately, there was another Dollar shuttle en route and we were not delayed. <BR> <BR>Be sure to get the free upgrade coupon from their website. Just print it out and give it to the person at the desk. It worked great! <BR>

thanks...are they real far away from the airport? do you remember what highway you took to head towards the city (if that is where you went)?

By "off-site," do you mean Dollar's counter is off in the cluster of all the car rental places, or is it really outside the general area of the airport, away from the other agencies?

In this case, off-site means far enough away from the terminal that you have to take a shuttle. On the way to Dollar, I saw lots of other rental companies, so I'm guessing they are all in the same area. It was no different than other airports like Dulles or LAX, etc. Nothing to worry about, sorry if I made it sound daunting. <BR> <BR>When we left Logan, we took the tunnel that is normally only for commercial traffic (it was a Saturday evening) and I can't remember the name. I'm thinking it was Sumner or something..better check the map. We had to pay a toll coming from the airport, but not to the airport. When we returned to Logan, we took either 93 or 95 (can't remember) and just followed the signs for the airport tunnels. From my understanding you have to take the tunnels to get out to Logan. <BR>

The tunnel that is normally open for commercial traffic only is the Ted Williams Tunnel. The Ted Williams opens up for all vehicles on weekends. The main airport exit brings you right to Route 1A which you want to take toward Boston-keep in mind, Logan in only about a mile from downtown Boston--they are seperated by the Harbor, so you don't have far to go to Boston propor. 1A brings you into the tunnels, then intersects with I-93 at the tunnel's end. If you havent already booked your plane tickets, try and fly in during non rush hour times as traffic from the airport can be horrendus in the late afternoon/early evening.

I forgot the advise I was given..I'm flying in on a Saturday 11 am...I hope to take the Ted Williams tunnel out towards Braintree (is that better than the Sumner given where I'm going, Betsy?)...what road do I get on once I"m in the tunnel to go towards Braintree. I can't find the thread...thanks.

The Ted Williams dumps you into South Boston after which you have to navigate city streets to I-93 which can be tricky due to poor signage. The Sumner Tunnel brings you right to I-93 which may be easiest. Saturday mornings in the Sumner should be OK. BUT, you never know w/accidents and such. I really think your best bet on a Saturday morning is to take the Sumner Tunnel to I-93--it's a little bit easier and the traffic really shouldnt be too bad. Ask the agent at Dollar when you get your car--they should provide you with a map and they can help you get your bearings and decide which way to go!

Missy, I agree that navagating beyond the Williams tunnel can be difficult, but just want to warn you of something I find peculiar when entering via the Summner...when you get to the Boston end, be sure to follow the signs to I-93 SOUTH! It's a very tight area and what you'll be doing is making a U-turn under the highway and then up a ramp onto the southbound highway. Sorry if this sounds trite, but I always find this bit strange and wanted to be sure you end up going in the proper direction. A good double-check is to follow signs to the Mass Pike (you do not want to get onto it, but it's also via the southbound highway).

Ann, thanks for bringing that up and being specific, Many times well meaning people will give directions, but they are so familiar with their surroundings and/or the lack of signage that they forget to bring up detailed points as you did.
