Dog-friendly hikes/walks in San Diego area

We're road-tripping over to San Diego next weekend to stick our toes in the water and cool off. We're familiar with the dog beaches and plan to spend time there, but would also appreciate some input on hiking trails that allow pets. Hoping for something similar to the Torrey Pines area - very disappointed that we couldn't take the beastie there last time.

do you mean a trail that specifically allows dogs to run free on trails? similar to a dog run at a beach or park area?

i am not aware of any - but i've seen many people on public hiking trails with their dogs on leases.

you might check out Lake Murray and Cowles Mtn. areas.

Hi nanabee -

Not looking for a leash-free area - it just seems like several places we wanted to hike didn't allow dogs at all. Thanks for the tips on Lake Murray and Cowles Mountain.

I have seen people walking dogs along the beach walk in Carlsbad at Tamarack Beach - there is an upper and a lower area - think dogs are not allowed down on the lower part - but there were lots of dogs on the upper level

Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve is a lovely place to walk and dogs are allowed so long as they are leashed.

Not a trail, but North Beach in Coronado (Dog Beach) allows unleashed dogs in a large area on the sand and in the water.
Its at the fartehst end away from the Hotel Del, just before the naval base.
