Speaking of protestors (specifically religious ones)....
I have a great photo of me and my partner at Milwaukee's Pride Fest a few years ago. There were a small group of religious protestors on the street corner outside the festival, complete with signs and bullhorns warning everyone they were going to hell, etc. Next to one was a rather large drag queen, dressed in full nun regalia, dancing around and blowing kisses at one of the men who was protesting. It was quite amusing, all the spectators loved it, even the cops out there for security were enjoying it, and she was kind enough to pose for photos with anyone who asked. |
When is the parade in NYC?
Thanks |
CHELLOLIVE, when I googled to find out the answer I got was today. Google NYC Pride parade and see what ya find out.
|
I think TheWeasel's got it right. It's a spectacle, a circus. :o) People go watch it to be entertained.
I would rather be sitting in a pub, sucking down some suds, planning my next trip. :-) ((b)) |
And true to form it poured down rain during today's parade in Atlanta. 3rd year in a row I've walked in it, and it's rained each time. I don't even bother to bring rain gear anymore, I just don't wear a white shirt.
Still fun, tho! |
It was a great parade this year, GTG. Hope to see you there next year.
|
Naw, In Virginia we'd never get Sen. George Allen to be guest speaker.
|
oh, she's on the scool board ... voting ... on what.
|
We have parades, but we also have an entire festival. Ever heard of Decadence Fest or as it's sometimes called, Southern Decadence?
|
As a PROUD big sister to a really great gay guy, I am PROUD to say that Minneapolis has the largest PRIDE PARADE between the coasts.
|
Charlotte has one as well.
|
Chicago has parades for everything, and the Pride parade is just one of over 100.
We even have a Von Stuben Day Parade, and I bet most of you don't have a clue who he was. Actually, my Mother (she never drove- or walked much of anywhere either so it was a BIG EVENT) took my kids downtown every year on the citybus (they all say it like it is one word- suburban kids eeeek) to the Columbus Day parade dressed as Italians, and it was one of the best memories they have. But I overall, never got into any of the parades, too short, I can't see a thing and too crowded and rowdy. Exception: the Southside Irish on Western Ave. in March which is a real debauch- must worse than the Gay Pride Parade and isn't downtown. It's much better, a real neighborhood attitude- people talk to each other everywhere and not just moving swarms of people. The one that has the most zip by far is the Black Parade, that one has the Jesse White tumblers etc. and boy could you use up some calories with that music. Joliet IL has a Gay Black Pride Parade, doesn't want to integrate with the regular Pride parade. Kind of like the Black Prom thing. |
JJ5, Wasn't he captain on the Love Boat? ;-)
Actually, being a history major, I know who he was as well as those two guys in the statue with George Washington on Wacker Drive (Robert Morris and Haym Solomon). |
The Bud Bulliken Parade is the Black Chicago parade. I couldn't remember its name, was having a senior moment. Drove me crazy, I think it took about 45 minutes and three other tasks for that name to light up. Finally, out of nowhere.
|
DC has THREE!
Youth Gay Pride in April Black Gay & Lesbian Pride in May (the worlds largrest Black pride event) The all encompassing Pride parade in June (HUGE tourist event) |
JJ5 - how exactly does one dress as an Italian?
|
TheWeasal:
Was the religous group the Phelps? They're from my hometown. Something I'm definitely NOT proud of |
Well, I'm glad you asked. They wore the traditional Sicilian garb that my grandmother brought from Palermo.
It was rather raggy looking to me, but it floated my Mother's boat. We do have a history too, you know. |
And it isn't entirely within black shiny suits and reflective sunglasses either. LOL!
|
For a minute, I thought the last post was in reference to a Pride parade :-)
|
Not at all, but in Blues Brothers parlez, with a hint of the Sopranos. But then we would have to add the neck jewelry and a goodly show of chest hair as well.
|
:-)
|
Do I HAVE to show my chest hair!?!?!?
(Shhhhh, Kal!) |
No, but if you have really "big" hair you might be able to ride in the back of one of those convertibles in the Pride Parade.
|
I'm going to her party tonight - does that count?
|
Really. I am.
|
Even in Springfield, MO, we have a Gay Pride parade...in fact a considerable population of GLBT folks. I myself haven't been in said parades but am past president of a local PFLAG chapter.
Regarding the alternate lifestyle comment, yes sometimes people do use the term inadvisedly. Not the worse desgination in a society where many condemn homosexuality as a wrong and sinful choice. Being gay is a part of one's being from birth or early childhood. I like what bluestar says about the term lifestyle regarding gender and would associate it more with profession or style of living. But what does the term urban lifestyle mean, for example? Not sure. ozarksbill |
Our great City of Eureka Springs, Arkansas has 2 to 3 diversity weekends, with Pride Parade's. You should come and visit. It's great

Believe it or not, Salt Lake City has a large pride festival, two days, first weekend in June, and an elaborate parade! My teenagers love it, and it is one of the most well-attended events in our downtown area.
Also, last weekend in Paris (June 28?), we were "caught" in the Pride parade on Bouleveard St. Michel -- my 70-year old father particularly enjoyed the girls from Folies Bergere...it was great, and universal! |
We don't have a pride parade, just a really big Christmas Pageant - still, it has a big queen and lots of fairies!
