Well, at least I know merc is indeed charitable, even if involuntarily...thanks to this thread somebody's getting plenty of info on NYC hotels. Thanks merc! And ignore that last post...I already knew Hillary was your companion in this high-cost/new carpeting adventure.

Let's see, buried within this thread we have: issues of class conflict, international social differences, reference to the NY governor's race, discussion of trends in spending of discretionary income, nice summary of NYC's best luxe lodgings, a little 'new math', discussion of disparities in income among entertainers versus regular Joe's, a pitch for the importance of charity, some genuine hostility over class issues, tossed with a bit of sarcasm and irony.

Now an umpteenth review of hotels on Maui, that'll set me to snoozin'. This was an entertaining thread, (though not all too informative).

I've stayed in the Lyden House. Fine as a place to rest your head, but not swanky and no room service, which seems somehow incompatible with the sort of getaway Merc appears to be planning.

I recall when I was in high school we had to read a well-known short story that was written about the turn of the 20th century about a young man (I am just now recalling that I think the name of the story was PAUL"S CASE) who went to NYC and stayed in the finest suite at the finest hotel. He bought fine clothes and had wonderful feasts out in the best restuarants. And he was cold and snobby and arrogant to all he met. And then after some time, like a week went by I think, he saw a paper that said a man of his description was wanted by the police for stealing a large sum of money from his employer. And so the young man went back to his fine suite and killed himself. Merc says he is far from rich and doesn't have all that much fortune and yet he thinks nothing of $4500 a night for a fine suite. Will he use it to kill himself in like in the story? That also reminds me of that SCENT OF A WOMAN film. If the lobby of this hotel is so important (but for some reason the hotel staff will not tell Merc about it but it will tell him about the suite) perhaps that is where he intends on doing the deed? It would get him even more attention than he is getting on Fodors all week.
