Does Kauai have better sights than St. Lucia?

I understand this may be a general question, but if you had a choice, which one would you first time vacation to, Kauai or St. Lucia?

1) Kauai and St. Lucia both have wonderful sights, rain forests, mountains, volcanos, waterfalls, beaches, and places for diving.

2) St. Lucia has All Inclusive Resorts, Kauai does not, the biggest difference I noticed.

Thank You for your opinions,

Tom

Hi, Tom -

Kauai's sights are unsurpassed. I don't think there you can begin to compare Kauai to St. Lucia. You're right in that there are no "all inclusives" in Kauai and I hope there never is. Two totally different types of islands that both hold a certain allure, but I think Kauai has it "hands down" over St. Lucia - just my opinion. However, I must say that Kauai spoils you for other islands because if you experience it first many islands will pale by comparison,

St. Lucia is a wonderful and beautiful island. The people are generally friendly, the sights are easy to access and we enjoyed staying at the Sandals St. Lucia. The views on some of the tours are breath taking and I enjoyed visiting a new part of the world. That said, if I had a choice to go to Kauai or St. Lucia for the first time I would pick Kauai.
Many more islands accessable for less money are available in Hawaii. Kauai has many beautiful landscapes and views. It is in the U.S. having our laws and most of our customs. And it is not a third world country. Many people that travel to St. Lucia are stunned by the poverty that they may see. We had a tendancy to stay away from that part of St. Lucia, but others find this difficult to deal with. Kauai also has many more beautiful and modern resorts that I prefer over St. Lucia. These are two islands that are beautiful with a great amount of vegitation, but they are quite different cultures.

The above comments are right on IMO.
What St. Lucia has in its favor, Kauai has multiplied times over. (Lack of all inclusive resorts is a FAVORABLE indicator IMO. All inclusives attract a certain type of vacationer, and I won't go any farther than to say that those who like Jamaica and Cancun and Daytona are more likely to gravitate to all inclusives, and Kauai tends to attract a bit different type of person ON AVERAGE).
The reasons Kauai is a superior destination are numerous.
Why do you think that those with unlimited budgets chose to make movies like Jurassic Park (and a litany of others) chose Kauai over the Caribbean?
Visit Kauai. Visit some of the other Hawaiian islands while over there. It is the rare individual who has seen Hawaii (beyond Honolulu) who thinks the Caribbean is better.

sights???? Aug 23rd, 2001 10:30 PM

Sorry....but this idea of "better sights" is so weird to me. We are talking about natural beauty, aren't we? Something to be in awe of? It's really a subjective opinion.
I also don't get it when people say they want to "do" a certain destination. I.e., "do" Maui, "do" New York.

On second thought, Tom should go to Aruba.

More crap from the Dead Travel agents Society. Don't you know when you've been sussed ???

Jim Aug 24th, 2001 04:48 AM

Hi, Tom -

Just have to get back to you here re the rude comment from "Dead Agent" who is way off. I have been to both St. Lucia and Kauai and am in no way affiliated with any travel group. You asked for opinions and assessments and that is what the "majority" of posters will give you. Let you be the judge and make your decision accordingly. It's individuals like "DeadAgent" who give these boards a bade name. I would venture to say that this individual has not traveled to either island and is just a frustrated, irritable individual who has nothing better to do than undermine this board and opinions of others who are trying to offer assistance.

Thank you for your advice, my wife and I are going to spend 4 days on Kauai and 4 days on Oahu. Your advice hepled us allot in making our decision.

Thank You

First of all, Maui has more to see than Kauai and St. Lucia is world class but Oahu and Maui are my fav.'s Both are incredible as St. Lucia is just in a world of it's own and I won't argue with you as to which is better. I feel very lucky to have see both. Kauai is an island to be careful with as to beginners it can be unfriendly in this regard. If you stay on Poipu beach you'll love it but if some stupid, idiot travel agent books you into the Princeville are for the high commissions being offered you'll never go back again. The problem is this. Like other sports in Hawaii, The rainy side of Kauai is the shits. Beautiful to see and look at and visit for a couple of hours but rainy as hell and no place to stay for a week. Hanalei is magnificent but just visit it(South Pacific was filmed there) - stay on the other side of Kauai at Poipu beach. My personal favorite is Oahu as it has more beachs and I go to a different one every day. Email me for my idea of a great week in Hawaii and I stay on the 30th floor in a one bedroom condo for $700 a week.

To:mikemurphy

Please keep your bad attitude on Maui with all of the other "beautiful people" and leave Kauai the paradise of an island it is and to people who can appreciate it.
Louise Aug 25th, 2001 10:35 AM

To MikeMurphy - we just returned from Kauai and loved it. If you had done a little research you would find that the weather on the North shore is beautiful in the summer time. Every day we were there was perfect and the snorkeling was great. We much preferred it to Mauai.

I've been to both and would go to back to Kauai before St. Lucia. Overall I think Kauai has more dramatic beauty than St. Lucia. Kauai doesn't need the all inclusive resorts as one can easily rent a car and safely drive to beaches, bars, and restaurants. I am not saying St. Lucia in unsafe, but I wouldn't feel comfortable driving myself around on unknown roads.

kal Aug 25th, 2001 12:52 PM

Never been to St Lucia but it would have to go a long way to beat Kauai's rugged beauty.

Also to mikemurphy, don't want to sound like I'm picking on you but we've been over to Kauai around 10 times and we have never experienced more than a day of rain and we go either in Nov for anniv/T'giving or New Year's.

Even though it's raining, it's still 80 degrees so you can still have a little fun, wet fun but still fun!

That's why it's called the Garden Isle?

As it's been said before, Kauai's No Ka Oi in our book!
Mahalo,
Kal

127 mo' days
Having been to both islands - my answer is - depends on what type of vacation you want - I liked both for different reasons:
1. Kaui - a tropical "american" sort of island - not a lot of culture shock for americans but certainly not very exotic either
2. St. Lucia - a 'caribbean' experience - you are definitely not in the U.S.A. - oh by the way the water is warmer
For a first time island traveler - my guess is that you will probably find Kaui 'easier' more familiar. So it depends on how comfortable you are about experiencing another culture.
Either island can be a wonderful vacation.

Oh, stop it!! St. Lucia is full of POVERTY and CRIME, etc., etc. -- absolutely DISGUSTING!!!
