Does it bother anyone else from the Bay Area...

... to see that San Francisco keeps being referred to as San Fran.?? I cringe every time I see those words. It's just.... not ever called that around here.

cher_cher Jul 14th, 2004 09:11 PM

Yessss! Don't even get me started. *shudder*

It doesn't bother me at all. I don't understand what there is to get irritated about. Do you also cringe when you hear "S.F."?

SF, Frisco, San Fran, they're all just abbreviations. Big deal. Aren't L.A. (excuse me, Los Angeles) people supposed to be the uptight ones? ;)

cher_cher Jul 15th, 2004 06:06 AM

Typical response. From Day One the people of San Francisco have resented "Frisco." That's OK; this is just an easy system for chafing the San Franciscans from the weekend warriors :p

Don't get me started on this. We are 'San Francisco', not Frisco!!!! San Fran isn't as bad, but....

The Ess Eff Chron published an old Herb Caen column a few weeks ago.

He said (paraphrased) as long as the tourist keep putting a few millions of dollars into city coffers, they can call it "Frisco".

As for me, it's San Francisco when talking but for typing with my two left hands, it's SF.

But then again, I'm from "Pixxburgh".

Those of us in the travel industry tend to refer to cities using the code of the servicing commercial airport.
I have referred to San Francisco as SFO and been criticized.
I think you should not let these little things bother you... people are simply trying to save keystrokes.

I'm a native Bay Arean, and SanFran doesn't peeve me, while Frisco does.
SF or The City are the best abbreviations.

DiFi, SanFran, MemChu . . . it's all good.
Now if only the job market would pick up a teensy bit, I could move back!
Have an awesome day everyone : )

So, exactly why is it that "Frisco" is offensive to residents of San Francisco?

Please don't say "because no one call it that." Obviously, SOMEONE calls it that.

I'm not trying to start a fight. Just wondering.

My mom always said it was because San Franciscans thought their city was an elegant city (and I believe her..women there were still wearing hats and gloves in 1968), and Frisco sounded like cattle driver talk. :-)
