Does anyone want to read my trip report to Los Angeles?

Well, here it is.

This is my first trip report. I have often thought of writing one for my trip to Europe, but I think the statute of limitations has run out for that one—it was a year ago.

Anyway, I lived in Los Angeles for four years when I went to school there. I moved back to the Pacific NW in 2004. This trip was a long weekend getaway to visit old friends.

I flew into LA on Thursday afternoon on a tiny Delta ExpressJet plane. It was really small, but cozier, if that can be said of an airplane. Picked up the rental car and quickly reverted back to LA driving mode—be aggressive, like everyone else! It was 4 p.m. by that time and the 405 was in true form. But at least the crawl was a steady one. I headed to Union Station, where my DH was waiting for me, having taken the train up from San Diego earlier in the day. I was a little worried about finding the station, but had no problems. Directions came back pretty quickly.

I picked DH up from the station and we set off for West Hollywood to meet up with some friends. Ugh. Another hour in the car. We eventually made it all in one piece. Thank god! Too much coffee on the plane, then two hours in the car had me doing a serious potty dance.

Feeling much better after a trip to the loo, we set off to have some dinner. We tried a new place, trying to deviate from our usual favorite places. It was on Beverly Blvd and it was called King's Road Cafe. I had a grilled vegetable burrito served with a caesar salad. The burrito had all kinds of veggies, including sweet potato, which made it really interesting. Very tasty. This place was also a bakery, so I threw caution to the wind and ordered the ridiculously decadent chocolate torte. Calories don’t count on vacation, you know.

I rolled my torte-laden self back to our friend’s house in WeHo, where he and my DH played Xbox games forever. I fell asleep. Oh how I love the Xbox. We left to go to our “hotel” for the night, another friend’s apartment in Hollywood. We arrived and stayed up really late just catching up. We fell into our respective couches sometime around 2 a.m. I wasn’t sleeping next to my DH, so I couldn’t elbow him when his soft snoring began. Sleep came quickly but was frequently interrupted. Where’s that Xbox when I need it?

Coming soon: In N Out, Santa Monica Blvd. and lots of pretty gay boys. Oh my!

Day 2: Friday

We woke up mid-morning, around 10 a.m. We took our time getting ready, then met our friend from last night at the most glorious fast food establishment on the face of the earth: In ‘N Out burger. God how I love In ‘N Out. And I don’t even eat meat! I got my standard: Number 2, with a grilled cheese, no onions, add pickles. (A grilled cheese is exactly the same as the cheeseburger, minus the beef patty.) Oh grilled cheese, how I missed you! My DH got his usual double-double and ordered his fries animal style, which means smothered in special sauce, cheese and caramelized onions. Remember: calories don’t count on vacation. This was my mantra all weekend. The fries were good, but I don’t think I’d order them that way again. Too much stuff going on there.

We went back to our friend’s apartment in WeHo for more Xbox. Oh goody. I wanted to get some beauty treatment while I was down there, so my friend walked me to a salon on Santa Monica Blvd. where I enjoyed a spa pedicure with a lovely foot and calf massage. Ahhhh. As I was walking back to the apartment, I found myself strutting down Santa Monica Blvd. with fabulous looking toes and thinking to myself how very LA I was. To complete the full LA experience, I pulled out my cell phone.

After a try with the Xbox (I wasn’t too shabby at this game! It only required that I push all the buttons a lot, which I can do. It’s pushing them in a particular order that screws me up), we walked down the street to check out happy hour at a bar called Fiesta’s. Two for one margaritas: Yes please! We chatted and drank, chatted and drank some more. Our waiter thought my DH was cute, which I found delightfully funny. Because he is cute.

While both my boys were off moving the car, I made a new friend. His name was Ryan Hill, a comedian and, according the magnet he gave me, a “hot hilarious homo.” I would say this description of himself is quite accurate. He provided lots of entertainment, but I think the margaritas made him funnier.

Alas, it was time to leave all the pretty, pretty boys to head to my friend’s apartment in Westchester. By this time we were really hungry, so we just stopped in to drop off our stuff, then headed down to Venice for some din-din. It was dumb of me to think my friend knew cool places to go. I assumed that she did, since she lives there, but no. And you would think I would remember her terrible sense of direction after we wandered around Dublin with her, all the while she was swearing up and down that the place was just up the next block. Well, I got a good reminder of that as we wandered and drove aimlessly. By this time I had gone into Hungry Mode. This is me becoming more and more unpleasant as each minute passes by that my blood sugar continues to drop. I needed food and I needed it STAT! We settled for a strange Hard Rock Café-type knockoff place somewhere in Venice. I don’t even know what the place was called, and I didn’t really care. They had a kitchen. I ordered a big salad, because one can’t subsist on grilled cheese and torte alone, you know.

Voila! I’m back to normal! Never underestimate the power of level blood sugar. We drank some beer and I finished my salad and some of DH’s French toast. Then we went back to her apartment, making a quick but oh-so-important pit stop to get…32 oz. Miller High Lifes. Did I mention we’re a classy bunch? Our friend really wanted to play Kings. I felt like I had gone through a time warp and it was suddenly 2003 again, playing college games with college friends. A few games later we hit the hay. Ah, glorious sleep.

In ‘N Out, fancy toes, margaritas, pretty boys, college friends—it was a great day!

Coming soon: Tank tops in November, Fight On! and skeezy “industry” guy. I know you can’t wait!

Day 3: Saturday

We woke up earlier today, around 9 or so, partly because our friend didn’t know how to work her heater and it was approximately a thousand degrees in her apartment. We got ready for the day, then said our goodbyes.

The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day, so we wanted to be near the ocean. We drove to Playa del Rey and had coffee and a bagel at Tanner’s, a little coffee shop. I used to work at Tanner’s in Santa Monica (now defunct) and Culver City, and did my training at the location in Playa. Ah, the memories. We drove down to Manhattan Beach via the oceanfront road, passing through Dockweiler Beach, the site of my and DH’s engagement. This whole trip was a venture down memory lane, but there were a lot of nice memories packed into this morning.

We parked and wandered around Manhattan Beach for a few hours. We were planning to eat brunch, but neither of us were all that hungry. So we just wandered and basked in the sunshine in November. I got a few funny looks because I was wearing a tank top. Hey! I’m from the Pacific NW! When it’s 70 outside, it’s balmy!

Seeing as my feet no longer had flip flop callouses on them (there’s no more flip flop wearing at home. It’s November!), my sandals wore some nice holes in the top of my feet, so we stopped wandering and started driving back north, toward Santa Monica, where we’d be meeting up with yet another college friend. But we didn’t really have any time constraints, so we took our time. We drove through the LMU campus to see what had changed and relive some more good times.

Then we decided to go to Costco. You may ask yourself: Why would they want to go to Costco on vacation? Well, I’ll tell you. Booze. It was to get booze. They don’t sell liquor in the grocery stores at home like they do in California, so we wanted to get some good stuff for WAY less than we pay here. Costco is normally a zoo anyway, but on a Saturday afternoon it was utter chaos (it didn’t help that it was in the same shopping complex as the In ‘N Out. Lots and lots of people share my love affair with the most fabulous fast food establishment on the face of the earth).

We made it out alive and drove to Santa Monica to get some late lunch. We went to the Omelette Parlor and sat on the back patio. I had the breakfast tacos, and DH had the avocado benedict. Good stuff!

We then went to our friend’s apartment and rested for a while, then set out for Q’s, a bar where we watched USC beat Cal. Fight on, Trojans!

We had to celebrate the victory, so we went to the NightLite or NightLamp or something like that. They had karaoke. Sold! After my stirring rendition of “Friends in Low Places” I met a leathery old dude who tried to convince me he was some hot shot movie producer and buy me drinks. Um…no thanks. Ick.

By this time I was hungry again and the bar didn’t have any food. What?!? So we walked down the street to O’Brien’s, where I consumed copious amounts of nachos. Say it with me: Calories don’t count on vacation!

With a tummy full of nachos and beer, I was ready for bed. It was a long but fun-filled day.

Coming soon: A reunion with a college roommate and farewell to the land of In ‘N Out, the most fabulous fast food establishment on the face of the earth.

Apparently not too many people are interested in this trip report, so unless someone's curious, I won't post the last day's happenings.

As a native Angelino and as someone who has eaten at In 'N Out since before you were born, I could not agree more. Double-Doubles to us all!!!!

vlcgoddess-Please post your last day. Love your writing style. Lots of times people read trip reports but don't comment. Also trip reports are great to reference when you are looking for restaurants, etc in a certain city.

You picked a great week to be in So. California. Beautiful weather and although I may not wear a tank top in 70 degree weather, I always wear my flip flops when I can.

Enjoying this down-to-earth trip report. I'm an LA native transplanted to the Pacific NW, and I also miss In 'n Out. (I also miss Del Taco and Carl's Junior, for that matter.)

Earlier this year I was visiting friends in SoCal and the In 'n Out burger, while tasty as ever, seemed smaller to me. Anyone else notice this?

Another amusing In 'n Out note...the guy at the table next to us was wearing some kind of a heart monitor. I thought it was interesting the way he would chew on his double-double and fries, and then check the numbers on his monitor. I don't know whether he was experimenting or simply testing fate.

Hey, I missed the LMU reference! My husband, brother, and 2 BIL went to Loyola (as it was known before they merged), and my son was a math major at LMU. And my daughter in law. I think they graduated in 2000-2001 or so.

Wow, I've been MIA for a few days, and it seems people are interested! Woo hoo! With the way my week has been going, the little things really make a difference...

So on with the show!

Day 4: Sunday
Uuuggghhh. Waking up=not fun. Too much...karaoke last night. And all that liquor didn't help either. I dragged myself off the couch and into the shower. We decided to meet old friends for lunch at My Father's Office, which I've read has the most fabulous burgers. As if we haven't had enough burgers on this trip.

After a shower and a return to zombie status for another 45 minutes, it was time to go. It was actually necessary for a light jacket this afternoon, because it was sprinkling a little! We met our friends--my old college roommate and her husband. It's been 3 years since I really even talked to them. So we played catch up over more burgers. This time they had caramelized onions, bleu cheese and something else tasty on them. My husband says it was great. I wouldn't know. I don't eat meat, so I ordered the beet salad. LOTS of beets--mm mm good. My waistline thanked me for the salad.

We chatted for a long time (probably to the annoyance of people waiting for a table in the tiny restaurant. Oh well), then said our goodbyes. We had just enough time before we had to head to the airport to make one more quick stop at another old haunt. Since we were in east Santa Monica, it was just a hop, skip and a jump to Westwood. So we cruised over there to Diddy Reise, a cookie shop that makes KILLER cookies. My waistline started to pout, but I soon won her over with cookies. They also make an ice cream sandwich for $1.25. You can choose whatever combo of cookies you want with whatever ice cream you want. I got choc chip and peanut butter cookies with espresso chip ice cream. Lest you think I'm a complete pig, I SHARED the ice cream sandwich with DH. So, no, I'm only a partial pig.

AAggghhh. That's me drooling as I remember it. We also got 1/2 dozen cookies on the plane. Because we hadn't had enough junk food yet.

So, did I mention Diddy Reise is a block away from In 'N Out? Uh oh. Yeah, I got myself another grilled cheese for the road. I couldn't leave the Land of In 'N Out with one more fix, could I? My vacation is still another 5 hours or so, and as you all know, calories don't count on vacation. I gotta milk those 5 hours for all they're worth.

We drove back to the car rental and dropped it off, then went to the airport. The flight home was the must turbulant I have ever experienced and it was really disconcerting. It felt like I was in an ATV going over sand dunes or something. Whew. Nerve-racking! After things died down, I consumed my last grilled cheese. Even though it was cold, It was delicious.

Goodbye In 'N Out. I'll miss you. Oh yeah, and our trip was great too!
