Does anyone know anything about the Angel Bright cabins?

We are planning a side trip to the Canyon from Vegas and have just a day and a half to spend. Is Angel Bright in a convenient location? Also, does anyone know if the rooms are nice? El Tovar is sold out.
The Bright Angel Lodge, when I was there, has a collection of cabins. They are at the low end of the scale, but habitable.
My son was there two years ago. He says they were ok -- equal to accommodations at other parks. Not great; not atrocious.
PS I would rate them as convenient.
The one we had was right by the trail head for one of the trails that lead down into the canyon. It was also close to the shuttle bus stop for the West Rim Drive road, which is blocked to cars in the summer.

We were there this Thanksgiving and were quite pleased with them. We were traveling with our adult children and had a two bedroom. They were all we needed after a strenuous day hiking--nice sized, clean, comfortable, decently furnished, comfy bed and a hot shower with plenty of velocity! My theory in a place like that is that you aren't in your room except to sleep so why pay more. We loved the convenience of being right in the park (have stayed before in town just outside the gates). It's great to hike out of the canyon and just walk yards back to the cabin, not get in the car and drive! (oh..my husband is GM of a 4 star hotel and he scrutinizes every place we ever go but was perfectly content with this--no complaints! :&g

Same response as above...convenient, spartan. Just yesterday we were talking about our stay at Angel Bright and laughed (now that it's in the past) about sleeping in our clothes and coats and still freezing as the heat in the cabin was not adequate (we went in Dec). So, heat, or lack of, was the only problem we experienced.

:> Did you figure out how to adjust those floor radiators? It took some looking at and trial but eventually we got them working well. Good thing too...it had been warm right up to the week we were there then...big cold snap. Our 2nd morning it was a mere 3 degrees at the rim when we got up, but we stayed plenty warm thanks to my husband having fiddled with the radiators the night before! Bright Angel Lodge had them turned down way too low. If you found the adjustment and it still didn't keep you warm, it most likely was malfunctioning.

It can be pretty cold up there! There was ice on the top of the Bright Angel trail during our trip 2 years ago...a bit nerve racking considering the steep drop-offs. Of course as you descend it warms up and after about the first 1/2 mile, the ice was gone. Do hike a little of it anyway as your perspective changes entirely as you get down and look back up. So far we've only made it as far as the Indian Gardens, about 6 hours worth of hiking, but hope some day to have the time to hike all the way in then spend the night down there.

Mustangs81...I didn't notice your email address until after I posted that last note. We are in Tampa as well. Wasn't it fun though to be walking around in cold weather (once you got out of that cold bed! :>) We were so surprised that 3 degrees didn't feel colder than it did. When it hits 45 here if seems gawd-awfu

Ah. Memories Nostalgia
The above comments reminded me of my first visit to the Bright Angel Lodge.
The time was March, and the temperatures were around 20 at night.
We managed to get the heater going, somehow. The instructions were fairly clear, but one of the steps involved priming the burner with kerosene.
The last step, "light match and start burner" was amended by a hand written note: "Run like H**"
We were there in Sept 1998. Excellent value. Clean, average size room. Didn't try the heater. It was under $65 and in the Park! If we go back to the Grand Canyon we would stay at Bright Angel Lodge again.

cmcdaniel...it would be anticlimatic if we suffered only because of lack of adjustment. I am the mechanical one in the family and normally would have looked for adjustment opportunities, I just cant remember if I did. Yes, being from Tampa, we love taking vac in the snow! Some other Fodorites and I are trying to get up a meeting/get together for Fodorites in our area. Let me know if you are interested.
