Do you watch the Travel Channel ?

Do you agree with the Travel Channels best beaches, best resorts? Do you want to go to these places, or not and why? Have you been there?
Just wondering, Caren

Used to watch the Travel Channel when they were actually showing programs about travel (Lonely Planet, etc.), but not since they became shils for special resorts and T&A crypto-Baywatch panderers.

Jeepers, I totally agree. The Travel Channel really blows. How desperate are they? They should change their name to "The Vegas CHannel" all Vegas, all the time.

Jeepers ; Dee Dee: I was thinking the same. How many more shows can you devote to Vegas? All of the places to travel in this great world and they show the same thing over and over. This is not a slight towards LV but there is SO much more out there.

Yep, I used to watch too, but now it seems that all they have are secrets of Vegas Casinos, blah, blah, blah, BS. And those Haunted Hotels, just what I want to do, pick a travel destination based on whether I can stay in a Haunted Hotel. Oh yeah, there's got to be a huge market for that!

Here's a hint Travel Channel, many of us don't care about Vegas! Start showing some REAL travel programs!

We don't have the travel channel on our cable service, but I have seen it while visiting relatives. It seems that there used to be interesting programs, but lately all I have seen is Vegas and women in thongs on the beach.

WAY DOWNHILL !!! The Travel Channel is SO awful --- absolutely nothing of use. They're obsessed with Las Vegas. And other shows are focused on nonsense that I consider barely under the topic of travel.

They offer no unique insights whatsoever -- Caren, maybe you just started watching and so I don't mean to jump all over you. You can get the same best beach, best resort info thru Conde Naste or Travel & Leisure.

The Travel Channel has completely sold out.

I can't confirm this, but would bet large sums of money, that they're taking payments from marketers for all this Vegas stuff that is practically like watching an INFOMERCIAL.

Also, their top ten lists and such are frequently NOT reflective of the best of whatever they're ranking. It's almost a joke in some cases.

Botoom line: the Travel Channel is now a day long infomercial for specific travel destinations, and a poorly done, very unobjective rating service.

Why doesn't the Travel Channel just go all the way and create one show "Top ten haunted beaches in Vegas" that they could show 24/7?

Used to be one of my favorite channels; now the only shows I watch are the ones with Samatha Brown, and that's because I think she's cute, not for any substantive travel value.

OH MY GOD!! I absolutely, loudly busted a gut on that one. You hit it right on the head. I make my husband watch it with me and I just told him what you said and he thought it was hilarious too. We've both decided you must be Dave Berry! I'm still laughing!

Now see I think Samantha Brown is annoying as hell. I do like Hunter Reno's Exotic Islands. Bring back Ian, I like it when he gets all drunk at night and they show him hung over the next morning.

I'll decide after we visit Mohonk Mountain Lake in October. Sam had a great show about it and we can't go into that area without taking a look!

Ken,

We apparently have different definitions of "geekiness". I use Rick Steves as a baseline, and by that standard, Ms Brown doesn't even appear on the Geek Chart.

I do watch, and enjoy, Rick Steves' shows since there's not much else available - unless one is interested in the haunted, luxurious, or culinary side of European travel. I just wish he'd stop using phrases like "workaday" so much.

Used to watch it wquite a bit - they had a great show about a french guy sailing his catamaran to exotic places. Now the only time I watch is when they have shows on roller coasters

Bring back Lonely Planet. Even Albey Mangels is better than those vegas shows and he was full of himself.

NO!!! Please do not bring back that idiot Albey Mangals and his speedos and bikini bottoms he wore in the 70's. Not just that, but he was STUPID as hell (got in the middle of a guerrilla war, got rushed by a rhino, wrecked his car and about killed his traveling companion).
