<i>I would consider a 2 diamond hotel to be fairly poor.</i>

Stereotypes prevent us from noticing differences.

<<<Stereotypes prevent us from noticing differences.>>>

What does that mean?

I use the diamond ratings as a starting point, too -- 1 star means I won't stay at all, 2 I will stay if it's just an overnight and I'm on the road, 3 is acceptable, 4 is good.

I find you can almost always go by the stars on the lodging. I have stayed at 1 and 2's enough to know that I don't want to unless absolutely have to.

I don't find that with the food. I find many many places that are outstanding that only receive a 2 stars. Most of these are hole in the all type place and perhaps even a little dirty. Maybe some roadside BBQ joint or something like that.

I agree with spirobulldog 1 and 2 star eating can be great. 1 and 2 star lodging can be sketchy.

Also in agreement with spirobulldog. My parents used to take my sister and I on long road trips when we were kids back in the 60's; and we (the kids) always insisted on at least AAA-rated three star properties (with a swimming pool, if you please). We were little motel snobs!

We used to carry the tour books on road trips, but now that the car has wireless internet, we use the iPad and netbook to check out what is in the area we are in. Still keep a road atlas in the car to help with planning. We rarely plan ahead, so everything is sorted out the day before it happens
