Susan your in-laws are simply an exception to the rule. Consider yourself extremely lucky.

Now Susan:

It's not nice to tell such stories about us. The last time you stayed with us you complained incessantly about the rats in the kitchen, dirty diapers in the bathroom, cockroaches in the bed and the drunken cousins all over the place. You shouldn't lie to these nice people here!!!

Imagine having Bernie as a guest in your house? All that anger and shouting...

Susan - Your in-laws sound a lot like my grandparents. Their house is wonderful and very relaxing. We call their house the "The Inn" and every holiday those who make their reservations early enough get to stay at The Inn. Everyone else has to find other accomodations. Unfortunately my grandparents are getting older and don't have the energy to host the holidays anymore. It's like the end of an era.

The moral of this post is to go out and buy a really well made new mattress for relatives. I know from experience how important having a comfortable mattress can be. For a few days I stayed in my extra room in my own house on a twin bed because the room was cooler but I woke up on the 3rd day about 1 or 2 a.m. and my back was extremely sore. I walked to my queen bed with a new mattress and immediately felt relief. I will never again sleep in the twin bed again unless it's an emergency. Therefore I'd suggest staying at a B&B in particular, since they seem to have better mattresses than laying on a nasty sleeper sofa or cot at a relatives.

At my wifes family, when they all get together, every piece of floor is taken. 12 people sleep in a small 1950s style two bedroom rambler. 6 on beds and the rest filling up floor space. When we choose to stay in a hotel, everyone acts like we are crazy.

Mark:

I just read your post and am highly offended! Why would you HATE staying with us? Why we brought your wife into this world! If it weren't for us you wouldn't even be married to her! Imagine telling people you don't want to stay with us! I've never been so hurt in my whole life! I'm taking back that new Corvette I got you for Christmas. You can forget about it now!!
