Do you love the state you live in?

The more I travel around the US the more I find to appreciate about the state I call home and realize how fortunate I am to live here.

I live in Central NY and I have lots of good things to say about this area. Fresh air. Lots of lakes and rivers. Great variety of trees. Great water supply. Greats schools. Nice affordable housing. And contrary to popular belief - nice weather. The winters are long and produce lots of snow here but we avoid a lot of what mother nature dishes out for floods, tornados, hurricanes, fires, earth quakes, lightning. We have all those but not on such a grand scale as other states.

I am even seeing that Syracuse in general gets a bad rap as a place to live but I can only believe it's because of the weather. The city itself has some really nice architecture. Although it needs some clean up. Those who say there is nothing to do here are full of crap too. Every weekend the city is hosting major events.

What sucks here is taxes and jobs. We are the highest taxed state in the nation and we've lost a lot of manufacturing jobs. There are bright spots though in the job market.

New York.
The Empire State.
State capital is Albany.
State bird is the blue bird.
State flower is the rose.
State mammal is the beaver.

I'm leaving the politics out of my post because I don't want to ruin it but add whatever you like. All in all I really love this state. What about you?

I apologize if this should be in the lounge but I thought it would be insightful and I'd like to hear what people say about other states since I haven't been to more than half of them.

I think there was a recent thread (possibly in the lounge, but I am not sure) asking the "best and worst of the state you live in." But no to answer your question I don't love the state I live in. It's okay, I don't feel strongly about it either way.

I like this post!

I spent the first 22 years of my life in NY state...WAY up there...Plattsburgh..ever heard of it? 20 minutes from Canada? Hour from Montreal? No? Didn't think so.

If you can, I highly recommend a visit there. Hour from Montreal. Hour from Lake Placid. Hour from Burlington, Vermont. And you are set on the most beautiful part of Lake Champlain. A valley between the huge mountains in NY and Vermont. It's gorgeous. I love my state and where I came from, although relatively small.
I moved to Boston, MA (where I live now) but that is strictly for working purposes.
My home in NY lacks the job market for any type of business future so I had to go elsewhere. Although I love the hustle and bustle of Boston, the concerts, the sports, I miss skiing Whiteface in the winter, tubing and spending days out on the lake, camping, and hiking. I guess that's why I chose Boston because it's the closest "big city" I can get to mountains/skiing/and ocean!

I love Maryland's Eastern Shore. I love our flag. I love our crab culture. I love that it was the Maryland Old Line regiment that saved the American Revolution at the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776. But, like most Marylanders on the Eastern Shore, I despise Baltimore, Prince George's County and Montgomery County.

Yes, I love California, northern California in particular. I have tried to live other places, but have always found my way back here.

I love being so close to San Francisco as I have deep family roots there. The beaches along the San Mateo, Marin and Sonoma County coastlines are favorite places for me to chill out (literally, on some days, LOL).

I am spoiled by the food scene here. Being able to eat in some of the country's best reataurants and being able to shop and buy spectacular produce, meats and cheeses is a real joy. I enjoy cooking and having all the best ingredients easily accessible and widely available is a big plus.

The music scene in the San Francisco Bay Area is something that I love too. From jazz to rock to classical, this area has always been on the cutting edge. There is a deep and diverse musical heritage here.

Did I mention the weather?

Yes I love living in Hawaii for the obvious reasons. It has it's downside, but wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

chgeeb- I know Plattsburg and it's beautiful country up there. I agree it is a good location and they enjoy more sunshine than CNYers although it's cooler too. I think the ST. Lawrence Seaway / Thousand Islands area is my favorite area of NY.

I also have enjoyed living near Lake Ontario and would deeply miss living near this beautiful lake.

VJ- where do you live?

Would like to see Maryland someday George you make it sound nice.

iamq- N California is someplace I really want to see. I've spent a lot of time in S. Cal and LOVE it there. I've only been as far north as Morro Bay on the way to Yosemite. Loved Yosemite and Sequoia National Forrest and King Canyon.

Mat- Hawaii has a downside? What? It's paradise here on earth. I've only been to Oahu but I love it so much I have been there 6 times now and will return.

Yes, I love NYC for all the obvious reasons (diveristy, dining, culture, music, broadway, shopping, etc) but I always wanted to be a "California Girl"!! As I absolutely ADORE the West Coast (San Francisco, Sausalito, Carmel, Big Sure, LA, Santa Barbara)

I will never leave the Seattle area. Don't know what my wife plans to do with my ashes, but I know that she won't take them anywhere else.

I was born in Florida, lived for a short time as a child in Mount Clemons, Mich. Then dad was transferred to the Syracuse, NY area when I was about 9. Live in this area most of my life, hubby was offered a job in Athens, GA and since I always had a dream to live in the south (the grass is greener, they say)we moved. While it was a nice place to live, it wasn't home and it for sure wasn't Central New York. We really missed all the lakes and rivers, the greenery, and most of all-or friends and family. Therefore, we moved back. We were in Athens for 4 years and are truly happy to be home in Central New York.
Annikany-You forgot to mention all the wonderful festivals we have in Centrla New York...Balloon Fest, Harborfest, Jazz fest, the Blues Fest, all the different ethnic fests they have and of course the Syracuse Nationals....I love CNY and will never ever move again!

I forgot to mention the part about all the wonderful restaurants we have here...
we couldn't find a decent pizza to save our lives in the south!

I hate N.J. for obvious reasons but I love being close to the city.
In the future, my wife and I are planning to move to Santa Barbara.

Iamq,
You really have it rough

Love? No, I don't "love" the state. Just love living in a large city, where activities are non-stop.

The kids are here, in the Bay Area, there is always some work available, so we stay.

(San Francisco)

mrsd2fan- glad you are enjoying life in CNY once again. Wasn't yesterday just the most beautiful day?

I know there is a lot I didn't mention but please add whatever you like. Those fests are also held at the nice parks we have here. Having just traveled through some state parks in PA and Ohio I have to say the Adirondack Park just blows them all away. So another thing to love about NY - our beautiful state parks!
